Digimon Beatbreak Review: The Dark Franchise Reboot We Needed

Digimon Beatbreak is taking the franchise in a mature, edgier direction. Dive into our full anime review to see if Toei's new cyberpunk Digimon series lives up to the hype.
Digimon Beatbreak aired its first episode on October 5, 2025. Even though it is an anime that started last year, it is still such a competitive title that it is even more interesting than the current seasons. I have watched every episode of it and I love it. I really think that Digimon Beatbreak is an amazing title; no matter if you are a Digimon fan or not, this title is a must-watch for everyone.
I think this is an obvious concern for everyone. As its name suggests, this is a Digimon anime, so a lot of people may think it will be boring or childish, or perhaps they don't even know this title has aired! I have asked a lot of people, and they really don't know about this title, even if they were once Digimon fans before!
Digimon has gone through a lot, and I can definitely understand why people have even forgotten to follow its latest updates. Since I understand, I feel like I should put more effort into introducing this title, letting everyone know about it so they can give Digimon Beatbreak a try. Believe me, this title is really good, once you try it, you will definitely love it.
Before you scroll deeper, since some of you may not know, I will explain this first: Digimon Beatbreak is an original anime. It is not an adaptation of manga, novels, or even light novels. For those who don't want to read any spoilers, please feel free to read this post! According to staff interviews, the main script hasn't even been finished yet, so everything in this post is purely my own reviews and predictions, it doesn't contain any spoilers!

Digimon Beatbreak: The Dark Digimon Title Everyone Is Waiting For
Before diving deep into Digimon Beatbreak, let’s first talk about Digimon as a whole. Digimon is a well-known, super-famous anime title. Although its history doesn't actually begin with anime, everyone reading this post has likely at least heard of, or even watched, the original 1999 Digimon Adventure. Digimon Adventure (1999) was a huge success, not only for the Digimon IP itself, but for the history of anime as a whole.
Have you ever asked yourself this question before? A lot of people are asking for deep and dark content in a Digimon anime, but since most people view Digimon as just a kids' show, where did this demand even come from? Indeed, Digimon Adventure (1999) started as a kids' anime, and to a certain degree, it can feel a bit childish or not "dark" enough. However, Digimon Adventure 02 and Digimon Tamers proved to us that while Digimon can be for kids, it also has the potential to become "dark" and mature.
Digimon Adventure 02 and Tamers dived deep into the dark sides of Asian parenting issues, and both of them were, once again, huge successes for the Digimon IP. For most fans, including myself, the top three Digimon titles will always be Digimon Adventure (1999), Digimon Adventure 02, and Digimon Tamers. Because these titles were such huge successes, they led fans and audiences to keep asking for dark content, even though Digimon is traditionally made for kids, not for adults.
As a result of everyone having false hopes for the Digimon IP, almost every title after Digimon Data Squad (known by its Japanese title, Digimon Savers) disappointed a lot of people, which ultimately led to fans leaving this IP. Luckily, after almost two decades, the production team has finally listened to the fans' demands and made an amazing, dark Digimon anime. The latest Digimon anime, Digimon Beatbreak features an interesting plot, incredible character development, and realistic, dark problems reflecting modern society.

The Story of Digimon Beatbreak: The Incredible Journey of Glowing Dawn
Unlike Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, or Cardfight!! Vanguard anime, the Digimon anime usually doesn't focus on just one person, but rather on a group of people. Because a Digimon anime features multiple main characters, they usually form a group. For example, in Digimon Adventure (1999) and Digimon Adventure 02, the group is known as the "DigiDestined" (or "Chosen Children" in Japanese). In Digimon Tamers, they are simply called Tamers, and in Digimon Beatbreak, the group is called Glowing Dawn.
Since I want everyone to watch, or at least give Digimon Beatbreak a try, I won't explain too much about the "Cleaners" in this post. There are many "Cleaners," and among them, Glowing Dawn is the most important team to know and remember, as we will follow their perspective throughout the entire story of Digimon Beatbreak. Every member of Glowing Dawn is important, so even if you don't remember Tenma Tomoro's name, it won't really matter, but you definitely need to remember the name Glowing Dawn.
There are four pairs of humans and Digimon in Glowing Dawn: Sawashiro Kyo and Murasamemon, Kuonji Makoto and Chiropmon, Sakuya Reina and Pristimon, and Tenma Tomoro and Gekkomon. Although they come from different places and started this journey for different reasons, they treat each other like a real family as they support each other and grow together.
The journey of Glowing Dawn is truly incredible; they have not only solved a lot of cases, but they have even defeated a Mega-level Digimon (究極体) together. Among all the episodes, I love Episodes 23 and 24 the most, as they really show us how amazing Glowing Dawn is, and also display the true possibilities of Digimon and humans working together. For those who are not familiar with Digimon, the Mega level is the highest rank, and it is almost impossible for a non-Mega to defeat a Mega. Yet, Glowing Dawn achieved it, and even unlocked a new evolution in the process!

The Dark Depth of Digimon Beatbreak: The Hidden Journey of Glowing Dawn
From what I have shared in this post, you may start to wonder: what exactly is the dark story of Digimon Beatbreak? Is there really any darkness in it? Actually, there are two distinct dark sides to the story of Digimon Beatbreak. The first involves the everyday cases that Glowing Dawn faces. Because the story of Digimon Beatbreak is so closely tied to modern societal problems, every single case Glowing Dawn solves already contains a certain level of darkness.
The everyday cases Glowing Dawn solves are crafted with incredibly high quality. The plot itself is great, and the darkness they added works like a hidden spice, making the series far more interesting. While this atmospheric tone is already one form of darkness, I want to talk about the second kind. Beneath the amazing journey of Glowing Dawn, there is an even deeper darkness hidden away—the inherent evilness of human adults.
Beatbreak takes a different approach to darkness compared to Adventure 02 and Tamers. Usually, Digimon anime approach dark themes through the lens of Asian parenting problems—essentially, that is what the darkness in Adventure 02 and Tamers is all about. But Beatbreak tries something completely different; rather than focusing on parenting issues again, it exposes us to the pure evilness of human adults.

Personally, I think Beatbreak's approach is really amazing. Although it may be hard to imagine the evilness of human adults just through words, the rules of the Digimon world are actually quite similar to the human world to a certain degree. There are ranks in the world of Digimon, such as Ultimate and Mega, and basically, a lower rank cannot stand against a higher rank, as the higher rank can defeat the lower rank very easily. Of course, there are times when a lower rank can win, just like in my favorite episodes, Episodes 23 and 24, but Digimon generally follows this rule.
The Beatbreak production team combined this Digimon rule with the human world's rules perfectly. In Beatbreak, the human world follows pure capitalism, where people who have money and power can do whatever they want, while those who don't have power can only suffer. Chairman Wong, who has everything, can do whatever he wants without getting into any trouble, while Tomoro, who has no status, can't even get back his brother's e-pulse.
Besides Tomoro's story, there are a lot of great conflicts related to social status in the human world throughout Beatbreak, and they are incredibly interesting. Personally, I think this is a brave and unique change for a Digimon anime; it serves as a great spice for the audience and really makes people eager to watch. This brand-new type of Digimon plot has moved away from parenting problems and into far more serious issues that everyone can resonate with, ultimately making it an important anime for a lot of people, including me.

The Road to a Brand-New Future: The Power of Family in Glowing Dawn
Once you start watching Digimon Beatbreak, you will fall in love with Glowing Dawn very quickly, just like me. Sawashiro Kyo and Glowing Dawn show us the true power of family, accomplishing a lot of miracles together. In Beatbreak, within Glowing Dawn, "family" isn't just a word—it truly gives them strength and provides a powerful energy for their evolutions.
Except for Kyo, the other pairs in Glowing Dawn aren’t particularly strong or special; none of them could really survive on their own in such a harsh world. But after they met Kyo and decided to trust him, everything started to change. They have shown Kyo their growth and evolutions. As long as Kyo is fighting alongside them, they have reached a level where no matter how many times they fall, they will always stand up and fight again.
You may think, weren't they just dragging Kyo down? At first, I had the same thought too. But as I watched more and witnessed their journey, I found that Kyo was also growing right along with them. Kyo is a super-talented person who can do everything and survive on his own; however, at the same time, he was tired of being a machine and started wanting to put effort into his own "ridiculous" dream.
Although Tomoro and the others are weak compared to Kyo, they truly admire him and are willing to help him achieve his dream. As long as Tomoro and the others are there for Kyo, he won't be lonely on this journey, and he will also have the chance to awaken his Mega evolution. The miracles of Episodes 23 and 24 are just the beginning; sooner or later, Kyo will be able to awaken the road to Mega and open up a brand-new path for Glowing Dawn.

Conclusion
I may have said it many times, but I am going to say it again: Digimon Beatbreak is truly an amazing anime. For those who are wondering whether this anime is worth your time, I will take full responsibility and tell you, it is definitely worth your time! For those who have forgotten the emotions the Digimon IP used to bring you, this is the exact Digimon anime you need, and you will definitely get all those feelings back through this show.
Every part of this anime is amazing, especially the story and the character development. To be honest, I didn't really think this anime could do so well, but after Episodes 23 and 24, I knew I was completely wrong. This time, the production team really knows what people want, and they are truly trying to build something extraordinary. I love Digimon Beatbreak, and I am really looking forward to its future growth and the road to Mega evolutions!
