Synopsis

In a reimagined Meiji Era Japan where youkai need government licenses to live alongside humans, someone has to enforce that. That someone is the Kidou Shinsengumi Co. Ltd., a company run by a woman named Oryo and staffed by the daughters of the original Shinsengumi's most legendary members. Yuuko Kondou, Toshie Hijikata, Kaoru Okita — names that carry serious historical weight, now attached to girls chasing down unlicensed spirits in a world that mixes samurai history with fantasy creatures and just a hint of steampunk. Into this setup walks Ryunosuke, Oryo's son, returning from Shanghai with his youkai companion Nekomaru and zero idea what his mother's company actually does. He figures it out quickly. The 13-episode TV series keeps things light and comedic throughout, leaning into the absurdity of its premise rather than playing it straight. The character designs come from Rumiko Takahashi — the person behind Inuyasha and Ranma ½ — so if you recognize that visual style, you know exactly the kind of warm, expressive energy these characters have. If you liked Inuyasha's blend of historical Japan and youkai chaos, or the alternate-history charm of Sakura Wars, this sits comfortably in that space. It is not trying to be a deep story. It is a short, breezy watch with a fun premise, familiar aesthetic energy, and enough historical name-dropping to feel clever without making you study for it first.
