After a childhood swimming rivalry reignites, a group of friends reunites to form a high school swim club and challenge a formidable opponent.

📖 SYNOPSIS

There is exactly one thing in this world that Haruka Nanase cares about: water. The guy would live in a swimming pool if he could. Back in elementary school, he and three friends won a relay race together, and then life did what it does — everyone drifted apart. Fast forward to high school, and his old teammate Rin shows up out of nowhere, fresh from training in Australia, attending a rival school, and carrying a chip on his shoulder the size of a continent. He doesn't want to reminisce. He wants to race. That confrontation is the spark that gets Haruka, along with his loyal friend Makoto and the enthusiastic Nagisa, to start the Iwatobi High School Swim Club from scratch. This is a 12-episode TV series from Kyoto Animation, and you can tell — the water animation is genuinely stunning, the kind of thing that makes you pause and rewatch scenes just to appreciate how fluid it looks. But what keeps you around is the dynamic between these guys. The rivalry with Rin has real emotional weight, and the show takes its time letting you understand why these friendships fractured and whether they can be repaired. It hits that sweet spot between competitive tension and genuine warmth. If you liked the team-building energy of Haikyuu or the rivalries in Kuroko's Basketball, this scratches a similar itch. And if Yuri on Ice worked for you, the blend of athletic ambition and personal stakes here lands in the same neighborhood. It's a clean, focused sports anime that earns its emotional moments honestly.

✨ MUST WATCH IF...

You love sports anime built around friendship, rivalry, and rekindling old bonds over 12 episodes
Kyoto Animation's gorgeous water animation and fluid swimming sequences are your thing
You enjoy character-driven stories — Haruka and Rin's fractured rivalry anchors the whole season
You're okay with heavy male fanservice — shirtless scenes are frequent and intentional

❌ SKIP IF...

You want a complex or unpredictable plot — this follows a pretty standard sports anime formula
Homoerotic subtext that never gets explicitly addressed or resolved frustrates you
You're looking for intense competitive stakes — the focus here is more emotional than athletic
