Desert Punk

Standing short enough to be overlooked but perverted enough to be remembered, Kanta Mizuno is a morally questionable mercenary wandering a post-apocalyptic desert that used to be Japan. Known as "Desert Punk," he's built a legendary reputation for never failing a job — and he's absolutely not the hero you'd expect. This 24-episode TV series from Gonzo follows Kanta as he takes on bounty work, outsmarts rivals, and gets repeatedly manipulated by Junko Asagiri, a woman who weaponizes her looks against him with devastating effectiveness. There's also Kosuna, a scrappy kid who talks her way into becoming his apprentice, mostly by being more competent than he deserves. The Great Kanto Desert is a lawless wasteland where survival depends on being either tough or clever, and Kanta leans hard into the latter — when he's not thinking with the wrong head. The humor is crude and self-aware about it, the action sequences are genuinely solid, and the protagonist is closer to an antihero than anything resembling a good person. If you liked the desert wasteland energy of Trigun but wanted the main character to have zero moral compass, or if Black Lagoon's grimy tone appealed to you, this fits right in that space. It's a seinen series adapted from a manga, so it doesn't pull punches on the darker or raunchier elements. Just know going in that Kanta is not someone you root for — you watch him the way you'd watch a car crash in slow motion.
