Synopsis

As a child, Akane Ousaki watched her father perform rakugo — that traditional Japanese art of solo storytelling where one person sits on a stage and brings an entire cast of characters to life with nothing but a fan and a towel. She loved it. She wanted to be just like him. Then the rakugo establishment crushed her father's career, and that admiration turned into something sharper: a quiet, burning drive to reach the top herself and prove them all wrong. This is a TV series about a young woman grinding her way through an old-school art form dominated by tradition and hierarchy, performing in front of audiences who can tell if you're faking it. The drama here isn't flashy — it's in the pauses between words, the way a single performance can shift the power dynamics in a room. Akane's not out for revenge exactly, but she's not going to let anyone forget what happened to her dad either. The emotional weight hits early and doesn't really let up. There's something genuinely compelling about watching someone pour everything into mastering a craft, especially one most people outside Japan have never even heard of. Studio Zexcs is adapting the manga for a 2026 release, and the source material has a strong following for good reason. If you liked Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu but want a more youthful, competitive edge to the storytelling, or if Blue Period's art-world intensity resonated with you, this one's worth keeping on your radar.

This episode was seriously fun! While it focused on just the champion's retelling and show style, it really builds anticipation for Akane's show later on.. Master Issho grows more and more unlikeable.. he definitely leans towards a more traditional mindset??

I like how the series' gives different animation styles for different Rakugo performances and types! Nerimaya's "BM" rendition was really unique. Shows like Jugemu had a traditional vibe in its portrayal. The animation quality feels like its gone up!

I honestly thought Karashi would be sidelined as a side character, but he was surprisingly likeable? Despite his ego, his passionate perspective on Rakugo was refreshing. His performance made me feel like he was deserving of his winning place!
