Synopsis
Having looked after herself since she was little, Akane Misaki sees renting her own apartment as a high school girl as just another step toward independence. Except when she shows up to move in, there's already someone living there — Ken Hasama, an older guy who signed a lease for the same place. Turns out the landlady double-booked the apartment and there's nothing else available, so these two strangers have to share a single-room flat until something opens up. You can probably see where this is going. The close quarters lead to accidentally walking in on each other, awkward tension building into something less awkward, and the kind of situations that only happen when two people have zero personal space. This 2023 OVA from Studio 1st, based on the manga, leans into that slow-burn cohabitation setup before things escalate. What sets it apart from a lot of entries in the genre is that the character designs are genuinely detailed and the voice acting actually sells the dynamic between the leads — there's a real sense of nervous energy in their interactions rather than just going through the motions. If you're into titles like Oni Chichi or Ingoku Danchi, this hits a similar note but with a more grounded slice-of-life wrapper around it. Fans of Kanojo x Kanojo x Kanojo might also find the roommate premise appealing, though this one keeps it to just the two characters and a tighter narrative.
