One of the Fall 2026 anime, The Vermilion Mask aired its first episode on October 10, 2026. Since there are so many amazing anime this Fall 2026 season, like Black Clover Season 2, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, The Apothecary Diaries Season 3, Even the Student Council Has Its Holes!, and more, you may have missed The Vermilion Mask, or never even heard of it.

When I first watched its official teaser, I became very interested in it, and since Ani-One's YouTube channel is streaming it, I gave it a try as soon as I could. After watching it, I was quite amazed, and I feel like it's a title we should talk about more. Right now, people don't really talk about The Vermilion Mask online, but I think it would definitely be a loss for you to miss this amazing Seinen anime!

The Vermilion Mask: What Is the Story of This Amazing Seinen Work?

As usual, before diving into the review, let me first share some information about The Vermilion Mask with everyone. If you haven't read or watched this title before, I believe one of the questions you're curious about is: what is the story about? Even though the anime has just aired, we are actually able to get a glimpse of the story. As its name suggests, The Vermilion Mask mainly focuses on the keyword "mask."

To be honest, the setting and vibe of The Vermilion Mask are actually quite similar to the legendary movie "The Mask (1994)". Since The Mask is a well-known movie, I assume most of you have watched it, so I won't touch on it too much in this post. The key similarity is that in both works, characters can get "powers" through a mask. Of course, it's not a full copycat of The Mask, but once you give it a try, you'll understand. It just reminds you of The Mask.

The mask, an object we're all quite familiar with, is no longer an ordinary object but has become a powerful weapon in the world of The Vermilion Mask. How can that be? Well, there is a super important character we need to talk about: Gaston Roux. The masks he created give abilities to their wearers. Different masks have different abilities, and even within episode 1 alone, we get to see some interesting ones, like cat and spider abilities.

Yes, you didn't hear me wrong: once you wear the cat or spider mask, you can act like those animals and use their strengths as superpowers. When I first saw it, I was quite amazed. Using a mask to gain powers isn't actually unique, since, as I mentioned, The Mask already showed us what's possible. But in The Vermilion Mask, there are lots of different masks, which ultimately gives this work so many things to look forward to.

Since The Vermilion Mask focuses on masks, let's also talk about another famous work related to masks. The world-famous title Bleach also involves masks (Hollowfication), so you may think there's some connection between Bleach and The Vermilion Mask. Unfortunately, it doesn't really feel like Bleach. In Hollowfication, the mask doesn't provide any power. The power comes from the Hollow itself. Ichigo's Hollow mask didn't give him any power; the Hollow living inside him provided everything. The Vermilion Mask is more similar to The Mask, as users gain power directly from the masks, so they don't need to have any power of their own.

It may be hard to understand from words alone, but basically, what I'm saying is, in Bleach, the power comes from the characters themselves, and the mask doesn't play a big role. In The Vermilion Mask, every special power comes from a different mask, and by switching masks, our main character, Peru d'Arrest, is able to deal with all kinds of situations.

An Amazing Seinen Anime for Fall 2026: Why You Should Give This Title a Try

Even though The Vermilion Mask has just started its journey, I truly think it's an amazing Seinen anime for Fall 2026 that everyone needs to try. Why do I say that? First of all, even within episode 1 alone, The Vermilion Mask has shown us almost perfect pacing. Nowadays, the competition among anime is crazy, and if an anime wants to gather fans or viewers as fast as possible, the first episode is extremely important.

When I first watched episode 1, I was quite amazed, because I stayed glued to the screen for the whole episode, without skipping or switching to other titles. The anime production team did a great job. They gave episode 1 incredible pacing, so once you start the anime, you'll just want to keep watching. A lot happens within episode 1 alone, but the team doesn't show us everything or try to explain every difficult term all at once. Instead, through Peru's journey, we get a lot of hints and are able to figure out the whole world ourselves, which really improves the watching experience.

Besides the almost perfect pacing, the animation of The Vermilion Mask is quite great too! Although it doesn't reach the epic level of the Demon Slayer movies, which most anime can't, the animation is really good overall. This is especially true in the last scene, where the animation is clean and the characters' facial expressions are really well done! That scene truly delivered the vibe, as the two important characters, Peru and Sonarue Maywood, showed us their true faces, which made it easier for us to relate to them!

Next, the voice acting is worth mentioning too! Although The Vermilion Mask didn't hire a team of legendary voice actors, the cast did a great job of bringing the characters to life. In the end, voice acting isn't just about the voice; it's about delivering the character. If you give it a try and watch the last scene of episode 1, you'll understand what I'm talking about. Speaking of voice acting, Otsuki Akio's performance is truly powerful. From the beginning of episode 1 to the last scene, he delivered the terrifying vibe of The Mask of the Warrior God.

The Vermilion Mask Manga: Do You Need to Read the Original Work?

The Vermilion Mask is not an original anime; it's adapted from a manga. For every manga adaptation, I think most of you have the same question: do I need to read the manga? To be honest, I hadn't read the original manga before. I started it fresh, so I don't really know exactly what the manga is like. But from what I experienced in episode 1, you can actually start it fresh, as the team has put in a lot of effort so that we can absorb every important term just by following Peru's journey.

In the end, we all hope that anime fans will go back and support the original work, so of course, if you have time, feel free to give this amazing work a try. But there's one thing I want to share with everyone first: although the anime looks clean and the vibe does feel similar to a Shounen, it actually comes from a Seinen manga. Since I don't know what the original work looks like, I can't tell you exactly which parts make it Seinen, but please remember, there must be a reason this manga belongs to the Seinen genre.

This is important information for everyone to remember, especially if you're someone who can't accept brutal or weird scenes. Seinen manga usually have a lot more brutal scenes compared to Shounen. Let me share an example: the Kingdom series. In the anime, you may feel like it looks like a Shounen, clean, with every scene "watchable," but in its original work, it's really brutal. A lot of scenes are brutal to the point where, although I know Kingdom's manga is incredibly interesting, I just can't recommend it to children.

As I said, The Vermilion Mask started its journey as a Seinen for a reason, so if you've watched the anime and want to try the original work, please remember this and be careful. Of course, I may be wrong, as the original manga may only have a few brutal scenes, but since there's a chance it could be like Kingdom, everyone should be cautious.

The Vermilion Mask Suggestion: Who Should Watch, and Who Shouldn't

As usual, no anime is perfect. This anime suits some people, but not others. Although I personally think The Vermilion Mask is an incredible anime that everyone should give a try, there are some people who I think won't be interested in it. First of all, if you're looking for something light or something with some "fan service," this anime is not for you.

The Vermilion Mask focuses on Peru's revenge journey. Although I don't think the journey will be very dark, it's definitely not a light one, nor is it an anime you can easily start and stop. Peru has a firm goal, and he has decided to do everything he can to achieve it, so his journey is intense, and you do need to put in time and invest in this title.

Since The Vermilion Mask needs your time and effort, if you don't have much time right now, or you can't really put much effort into anime, The Vermilion Mask isn't suitable for you either. That said, I don't think The Vermilion Mask's story is that complicated. It's not that you have to put in time and effort to figure it out; it's that The Vermilion Mask is so interesting that you'll want to do it yourself.

Other than that, I think everyone should give this title a try. The Vermilion Mask is not a Shounen, yet it has something more interesting than a typical Shounen, so even if you're someone who dislikes Shounen, this is still a great choice for you. If you're looking for something new and exciting, this is definitely a must-watch, as it will give you a truly great watching experience.
