Unusual School Life and the Student Council: The Golden Combination for a Comedy Masterpiece

Before diving deep into the review of Even the Student Council Has Its Holes, let me first share some information about it. As you can see from its title, this is one of the anime that focus on a special organization: the student council. If you are someone who loves the comedy genre, or you have watched a few anime, I believe you are not unfamiliar with the keyword "student council," or 生徒会 (seitokai) in Japanese.

The student council is definitely one of the golden keywords for a great comedy anime, and it usually comes with another keyword: "unusual school life." But just so you know, student councils in real life don't have that much power, and their members are just normal people, so don't get confused! Unusual school life plus the student council can make a really good comedy anime. We have amazing titles like My Wife is the Student Council President!, Student Council Staff Members, and Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. All of them are hilarious and will definitely give you an incredible viewing experience!

Why can unusual school life and the student council always be the golden ingredient for great comedy? Personally, I think the biggest reason is that this combination can fulfill every desire that we and the author have. As I mentioned earlier, student councils don't have much power in real life, but in anime, they can literally do whatever they want. Kaguya-sama: Love Is War has shown us that, with the power of money and the student council, this combination can really make any fantasy come true, which ultimately allows the author to unleash all of his creativity!

On top of that, in the world of anime, the student council usually needs to deal with and interact with a lot of people, which allows the characters to get involved in all kinds of events and ultimately makes their journey far more interesting. Kaguya-sama: Love Is War is still the best example. Simply because of his role as student council president, our main character, Shirogane Miyuki, gets involved in all kinds of weird events, and all of them will make you laugh all day.

Mizunoe Ume and His New Journey: The Hilarious "Holes" of the Student Council

After sharing the basic information about Even the Student Council Has Its Holes, let's talk about the anime itself. In this anime, we follow the story from the perspective of the main character, Mizunoe Ume, and watch him get his mind blown by a student council that has a lot of "holes." The story is quite different from the example I used earlier, Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. Shirogane is already used to student council life from episode 1, but Mizunoe Ume only begins his new life in episode 1.

Usually, only great students, or even the best students, are allowed to join the student council. So before starting his new life, Ume thought he would meet a lot of "best" people, but it turns out that everyone has "holes," and the student council itself actually has some problems! As you read this post or watch the anime, you might be wondering what "holes" means. Well, there are actually two ways of looking at the word "holes." The first one, which is the safest and the one I want everyone to remember, is that even the members of the student council, who are supposed to be better students, have flaws. The word for hole, 穴 (ana), actually also means "flaw."

Even just within episode 1, we witnessed all kinds of "holes." At the beginning of the story, we have a problematic teacher, Hiratsuka Satomi, and as the story progresses, the troublemaker, Otori Tan, causes a lot of problems. Of course, every part of it is just so funny, and I laughed so hard! Since I've only explained it in words, it may be hard for you to understand the word "holes," but you can actually just think of it as a word to describe these two characters. They have such broken personalities and cause all kinds of problems, which ultimately create all kinds of holes in Ume's new life.

Besides this perspective, there is actually a hidden meaning behind the word "hole," and since this article is supposed to dive into this anime, I will share it with everyone here as well. The author of Even the Student Council Has Its Holes, Muchimaro (also known as Maro Muchi), sometimes shares adult content or sexy images of his characters on X (formerly Twitter). Knowing this, the word "hole" is also a dirty pun, and it is the reason why everyone around Ume is a girl and why even Otori often has some sexy "female" scenes. Even just from episode 1, I believe a lot of you may have sensed that this anime has some dirty adult jokes, and you are not wrong. This anime is not an ecchi anime, but the dirty jokes add great spice to it and make the work so hilarious.

Beyond the Holes and Student Council Life: What Is the Story of This Anime?

With so many holes and troublemakers around him, Ume has faced, and will continue to face, a lot of funny events, which will give us tons of hilarious scenes. I think you may be wondering: we know from the title that the story of Even the Student Council Has Its Holes mainly focuses on Ume's student council life, but is there any other story in this anime? For example, in the Kaguya-sama: Love Is War series, the love war is actually the main plot, and the whole series moves forward with it.

Unlike the example, Even the Student Council Has Its Holes truly focuses on student council life and its holes, and there is no other plot. Besides watching the anime, I have also read the manga, so I can say this confidently: up to the latest chapter, there are no other storylines. And just to add a bit more information, this anime is actually adapted from a 4-koma manga (four-panel comic strip). This doesn't mean anything bad, but 4-koma works usually don't have any huge storylines.

Personally, I am quite enjoying Even the Student Council Has Its Holes, even though I am someone who cares a lot about story and plot, because it is just so hilarious and really makes me laugh all day. Although it doesn't really have a unique or interesting story, the characters are amazing, and the voice actors have done an incredible job of giving them new life.

Starting with our main character, Mizunoe Ume is voiced by Sakata Shougo (Chainsaw Man – Aki, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run – Johnny Joestar). Our student council president, Kotobuki Hisako, is voiced by Shiraishi Haruka (Golden Kamuy – Asirpa, Clevatess – Alicia), and our student council treasurer, Terui Arisu, is voiced by Ishigami Shizuka (Chivalry of a Failed Knight – Stella, Demon Slayer – Makio). These professional voice actors have really put their effort into the characters, and they have created a masterpiece for us. The atmosphere they give us, a student council that feels extremely real, really helps us get hooked on the anime, even though the story is not as strong as other famous titles.

Suggestions for Even the Student Council Has Its Holes: Who Should Watch and Who Should Pass?

No anime is perfect. No matter how amazing an anime is, there will be people who love it and people who aren't interested in it. The same goes for Even the Student Council Has Its Holes. Although I personally think it is a masterpiece, I do feel that it may not suit some people. First of all, if you are looking for a good comedy anime, this is what you need, no questions asked.

In terms of comedy, the quality of Even the Student Council Has Its Holes is really high. If you are someone who likes the Kaguya-sama series, you will definitely love this anime. Next, if you are just looking for a new and interesting anime this season, this is also what you need. It is currently just the beginning of Fall 2026, and although there are other interesting titles, most of them have only just started, so they need some time for their stories to progress.

Take Black Clover Season 2, for example: it still takes some time for us to reach the best parts, but Even the Student Council Has Its Holes is different. For better or worse, since this anime focuses only on hilarious everyday life, every episode is super high quality, and you don't need to wait for the story to progress to reach the interesting parts. This is definitely the biggest reason to watch this anime now, as you can enjoy a great viewing experience from a very early stage, but it is also the biggest reason why some people may want to skip it.

This may be a bit of a spoiler for everyone, but to be honest, although every episode is extremely hilarious, it also means that you don't have anything else to expect from the anime. There are no high-quality battle animations, plot twists, betrayals, deep character development, or even serious conflicts between characters. Even the Student Council Has Its Holes is a pure comedy. I promise this title will give you a great comedy experience, but other than that, you can't really expect much from it.
