This episode was admittedly more stagnant than the previous ones, but provides a good breather while keeping the anticipation and loose ends interesting for the audience. Character work is always there (Touka and her brother & moral dilemma) and Rize remains so elusive.

I really liked the exposition with Amon, it shows how his situation and what he's seen so far keeps him from even trying to understand ghouls or why the system hates them ++ the way they're depicted in media. Everything that happened to him was confirmation bias tbh.

Love this episode but is hinami's bird actually named loser or is that a really unfortunate translation issue..

S1EP9. I always love the opening of tokyo ghoul. This ep shows how important the character of Rize is, it's like both-good and bad parties wants her. I am not a fan on what's about to happen to our peace-addled Kenikichi *or something like that lol. I like how smart Hide is,

I'm happy seeing Hinami happily spending normal days with the cafe's new pet. This episode was a bit of a breather, normal but the world-building is key! But seeing life return to normal at Anteiku while the CCG prepares for war creates such a tense vibe. Introducing the 11th Ward lore sets the stage for something massive. Coming episodes will be banger💥!

The episode mostly deals with the aftermath of the fights, so things are just getting back to usual this episode. It was nice to see more character backstories while Kaneki tries to learn more about Rize.
Love the new character designs we got, but things will go down again.....

Yoshimura offering coffee was so calm and wise. Animation on his gentle moves soothing af. Cafe felt like a safe spot in the chaos. His mentor energy was comforting, made me feel safe too.

Things explode here 😳 The pacing speeds up, and the danger feels real. It’s not just internal conflict anymore it’s survival. I felt tense the entire time.

Just when you thought the 20th Ward was cooling off, a new gang called Aogiri Tree rolls in looking to start a riot. They aren't looking for coffee—they’re looking for soldiers. Our boy is caught in the middle of a power struggle that’s about to break the birdcage wide open.

I really liked seeing a bit of Amon’s relationship with Mado and how he learned from him. The episode felt calmer but still built tension for what’s to come. Kaneki’s curiosity about Rize is growing, and I can tell there’s so much more yet to uncover as few characters emerges!

Setup episode fr. New charters and these guys seem like actual threats. Hide getting suspicious of Kaneki but not pressing him was real friend behavior. Animation was relaxed but consistent.

A bit of a "calm before the storm" feel, but the introduction of the Aogiri Tree changes everything. The power scaling just went through the roof. Watching the 20th Ward prepare for war creates such a thick sense of impending doom. Recommended to watch!

EPISODE CONTEXT

Sitting at episode 9 of 12, 'Birdcage' functions as a crucial decompression point after the emotionally charged events of 'Circular,' giving characters space to heal and recalibrate. It deepens relationships and plants narrative seeds — particularly around Kaneki's investigation into Rize — that become essential as the season barrels toward the Aogiri arc in its final episodes. This is the calm before a significant escalation, making the character work here load-bearing for everything that follows.
