The Dawn of the Witch presents a mixed viewing experience for new audiences, with its decent atmosphere overshadowed by rushed pacing and noticeable unevenness.

📖 SYNOPSIS

At the Royal Magic Academy, Sable holds the unfortunate title of worst student, and he also has zero memories of his life before enrolling. When the headmaster sends him on a mission to help establish a witch village in a region where people still really don't like witches, he's paired with a ragtag group: Roux Cristasse, a powerful witch known as the Dawn Witch; Holt, a girl who happens to have antlers; and Kudd, a lizard-man Beastfallen. The setup is basically "go make peace in a place that wants nothing to do with you," which goes about as smoothly as you'd expect.

This 12-episode TV series sits in the same universe as Grimoire of Zero, so if you watched that and wanted more of its world-building, this picks up where that story left off and expands the lore in a satisfying way. The tone leans into a mix of action and comedy without getting too heavy, though the post-war tension between humans and witches gives the story some actual weight. Sable's amnesia isn't just a throwaway gimmick either — it ties into the larger narrative in ways that keep things moving.

If you liked Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho or vibed with the fantasy atmosphere of The Ancient Magus' Bride, this one's worth your time. It's not reinventing the genre, but the character dynamics are fun, the Beastfallen designs are genuinely cool, and Tezuka Productions gives the world a clean, readable look. A solid fantasy adventure that doesn't overstay its welcome.
