Synopsis

The Celestial Records speak of the existence of the "Seraphim," a race of divine beings who give blessings to humanity and are offered prayers by them in return. Those who are anointed with the ability to interact with these spirits are known as "Shepherds." Hailed as heroes for their prompt appearances in times of crisis, while also being feared for their power, the Shepherds are imprinted in common folklore along with the Seraphim. Sorey is a young human who has spent his entire life living in harmony alongside the Seraphim in the village of Elysia. Fascinated by the myths of the Celestial Records, he explores some nearby ruins with Mikleo—his childhood Seraphim companion—hoping to enlighten himself about the Seraphims' history with mankind. Unfortunately, they become trapped in the depths of the historical site during their investigation. While searching for an exit, they come across a mysterious girl who desperately seeks the help of a Shepherd to save the world, which is on the brink of being consumed by darkness. Despite Mikleo's warning about making contact with other humans, Sorey decides to help the stranger, which unknowingly leads him closer to the dream of peaceful coexistence between man and Seraphim.

As the title of the episode says, it's the appearance of the big boss and also a reappearance of a certain character in ep 0. There wasn't much of a big fight and it looks like the Lord of Calamity is just testing the capabilities of Sorey. I was just wondering: if a person says that making a pact would put a big burden on Sorey, shouldn’t there be signs of him being exhausted afterward? It feels like the studio is glossing over this with the great animation during the pact scene, since Sorey doesn’t even look tired afterward 🤔. Anyway, that’s the only inconsistency I’ve observed in this episode. This is a great end for the cour and another new beginning for Sorey and Alisha, there are still some question left unanswered but let's just save it for the second cour.

It feels like Murphy’s Law is in full effect in this episode. I can’t help but feel anxious about the entire situation and worried about the well-being of both Sorey and Alisha. Ufotable outdid themselves with this one, animating a whole war without cutting any corners, I don't even see anything I can complain about their work in this episode. The scene at Alisha's side would have been surprising if it wasn't spoiled at the ED on Velvet's episode, I'm still left wondering why the studio did that. P.S. The final episode of this cour is sure to be a big one, judging by the scene at the end of the episode.

This is a moving episode. It highlights Sorey’s unwavering character despite being confronted with the heavy responsibility of being a Shepherd. Alisha’s words also reminded me of a memorable quote from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood regarding the Ishvalan War. What makes this episode even more spectacular is the soundtrack during their scene, as well as Ufotable’s exceptional animation style P.S. To be honest, I was frustrated that the Scattered Bones claim to be just (see ep 3), yet their judgment is based on hearsay. They should probably add “clowns” to their job titles 😒

Well...there's no backstory of Velvet and will just continue with the fight against the Praetor Exorcist. If you want to know about the backstory of Velvet then play Tales of Berseria. The CGI of the large enemy (I'll just make it vague to avoid spoiling) doesn't look odd and the artes are beautifully animated. However, the animation of the waves and the art style of the ship is conflicting, it just looks unsettling in my opinion. The soundtrack that played during the fight and climax suited Velvet's character perfectly. It reflected her unwavering determination and straightforward nature.

You would be wondering, who's that lady?, where's Sorey and the others? what's with the dark place? Well...this is why the anime's title has a Cross at the end, this episode tells the story of Tales of Berseria, a prequel game of Tales of Zestiria. It's completely normal to be confused if you haven't played the game, I even had a friend help me tell a quick summary of Berseria. Judging by what Velvet and the others are talking in the next episode preview then it will tell the story about Velvet and the events that lead to her current situation 🤔 P.S. Better skip the ED to avoid getting spoiled on the future happenings in the story of Zestiria.
