The last episode wraps up the narrative perfectly; we see Genji’s journey to a beautifully sombre end as he goes into exile in Suma. We see him reflect on all his past lovers while listening to the crashing sea waves; it leaves us with a deep sense of sadness and regret

In this episode we get to see Genji entangled in a career-ending scandal. The visuals in this episode are chaotic, as the use of double images emphasises how Genji’s life is spinning out of control. It is an incredibly intense episode that sets the tone for the tragic downfall of Genji.

This episode is characterised by the intense relationship between Genji and Fujitsubo and a sense of tension in the plot. Their affair will have repercussions in the near future and create serious conflicts, particularly for Fujitsubo.

It is a season finale with a strong emotional touch, centred on the guilt and anguish Genji feels over his sins, and the protagonist’s deep reflection and search for inner peace. He finds the love he had been looking for in his life.

This episode takes an incredibly dark supernatural turn as we see Genji’s wife get targeted by a ghost. It is a visually spectacular episode and yet heavy to watch as we see the peace that Genji was trying to maintain be completely shattered.

Here we get to see Genji desperately try to hold on to Lady Rokujo despite her trying to cut ties off with him. It is an incredibly emotional episode as the atmosphere of the episode mirrors the absolute heartbreak and slow unravelling of their relationship.

In this episode Genji is hit with a whirlwind of emotions as his forbidden love Lady Fujitsubo leaves the Imperial Palace with Emperor Kiritsubo. As he is mourning his abandonment, he suddenly gets some surprising news from his legal wife Aoi. His world is turned upside down

This is probably the episode with the highest level of conflict in this story, where we see Genji embroiled in serious political and reputational problems. The chapter effectively conveys the sense of tension in the atmosphere surrounding the protagonist.

This episode effectively captures the conflicts that are beginning to emerge within the palace. In this instance, these conflicts centre on Fujitsubo’s inner herself, as she must decide on her relationship with Genji.

This chapter takes a purely emotional approach, focusing on the deep sadness Prince Genji feels over the recent tragedy, as reflected in his dreams and state of mind.

A new free-spirited princess enters the story, stirring things up as she makes a good impression on Genji. It gives a playful distraction from the heavy drama we experienced from the previous episodes. The animation style captures the beauty of the Heian court night life beautifully.

The tension in this episode is incredibly insane; Genji does the ultimate taboo by getting inappropriately involved with his stepmother, Lady Fujitsubo. This leaves Lady Fujitsubo crushed under a mountain of guilt. I can confidently believe that this is one of the most jaw-dropping episodes of the series so far.

In this episode we see Genji is completely shattered after the sudden loss of one of his lovers. We see his buried feelings come back to life when Lady Fujitsubo gives him a small letter. It is an episode that shifts the romantic dynamic of the show.

In episode 3 we get to see Genji get overwhelmed by Lady Rokujo’s beauty and depth of her love. The show does an excellent job at highlighting how courting can be a struggle and not as straightforward as one may expect it to be. This episode really forces us to pity the women entangled in Genji’s chaotic romantic web

In this episode we see Genji seek solace from his forbidden affection towards his stepmother by pursuing Lady Rokujo. The visual transitions enhance the dramatic lighting and heighten the intense court intrigue.

The first episode captures the tragic Heian Court, as we get to see Young Genji fall deeply for Lady Fujitsubo. The blend of antique animation and twisted romantic conflict makes it a stunning tribute to the original literature.

This episode reintroduces well-executed supernatural elements, which add drama and impact to the storyline centred on Prince Genji.

This episode unfolds at a slow pace with few significant events, and shows Genji becoming involved in a romantic affair, which will prove politically damaging in the future.

We see Prince Genji suffering from deep depression due to the tragedy he had to face, yet he remains in love with Fujitsubo despite so many years having passed.

Among his lovers, Hikaru meets a woman who ultimately captivates him, but rumours about his love life will have unforeseen consequences for his future.
