High School! Kimengumi (2026)
Oshimeter
Synopsis
At Ichiou Junior High, Rei Ichidou and the four other guys with the weirdest faces have turned causing chaos into an art form. Rei and his crew—Gou, Kiyoshi, Jin, and Dai—are the Kimengumi, a group of misfits who've basically made it their mission to derail every normal school day. Then transfer student Yui Kawa shows up, and instead of running the other direction like a reasonable person, she gets pulled into their orbit. Her friend Chie tries to keep things sane, but good luck with that when the school is packed with rival cliques: pretty boys, delinquents, jocks, and a squad of tough girls who don't take anyone's nonsense. This is a 2026 revival of a classic '80s manga, and the modernized animation keeps the original goofy character designs while making everything look clean and fresh. There's even a city-pop rearrangement of the old theme song by Night Tempo, which honestly slaps. The humor leans into absurd gag comedy with a light romantic thread running through it—think the chaotic energy of Daily Lives of High School Boys mixed with the ensemble silliness of Nichijou. If you liked Gintama's approach to turning mundane situations into comedy gold through sheer force of personality, this hits a similar vein but in a school setting. It's 12 episodes, so it doesn't overstay its welcome. Just a fun, breezy watch about dumb kids being dumb together.
