Synopsis

Arriving at college expecting a normal life, Iori Kitahara instead ended up in a diving club where nobody actually dives, but they just drink mysterious unlabeled beverages and wake up naked on the floor. Two seasons of that chaos later, and now this crew is going international. Grand Blue Season 3 takes Iori, his otaku best friend Kouhei, his perpetually disappointed cousin Chisa, and the rest of the Peek-a-Boo diving club to Palau for their first overseas trip. The early episodes set up exactly what you'd expect: a group of degenerate college students who can barely function domestically now trying to represent their club in a foreign country. It goes about as well as you'd think. The thing that makes Grand Blue work is that it commits fully to the bit. The comedy is genuinely unhinged: faces contort into nightmare fuel, drinks glow colors that shouldn't exist in nature, and Iori's dignity takes a beating every single episode. But underneath the chaos, there's actual character development and some genuinely beautiful underwater scenes when they do manage to get in the water. If you liked Prison School's shameless energy or the absurd social dynamics of Arakawa Under the Bridge, this is your kind of show. It's a seinen comedy that understands college life is mostly just bad decisions made with people you'll somehow remember fondly. The Palau setting just raises the stakes on how far those bad decisions can go.

Am I the only one who thinks season 3 feels kinda off? I've been watching grand blue since season 1, and the first thing i noticed about season 3 was the animation. It just doesn't feel as expressive anymore. the facial expressions aren't nearly as funny, and some scenes feel kinda stiff. the animation just doesn't have the same energy or personality that made seasons 1 and 2 so enjoyable to watch I'm guessing it's because of the studio change. i totally get that, but i really miss how lively seasons 1 and 2 looked. I'm still gonna watch it because it's grand blue, but i definitely prefer the old animation style
