Bungo Stray Dogs 4

Synopsis
Long before the Armed Detective Agency was a thing, Yukichi Fukuzawa was just a retired military swordsman trying to make it as a freelance bodyguard, and honestly, not doing great at it. Then he meets Ranpo Edogawa, this loudmouth kid who claims he has a supernatural deduction ability, and they get pulled into a strange murder case that changes everything. That's where Season 4 picks up, rewinding the clock to show you how the agency actually came together. This is a 13-episode TV series from Studio Bones, and the animation during fight sequences is as sharp as you'd expect from them. But the real draw here is the character work. Fukuzawa's quiet intensity bouncing off Ranpo's bratty confidence gives the origin story actual weight, not just fan service backstory. The show weaves real literary figures into a supernatural crime thriller set in Yokohama, and the mystery elements have genuine teeth to them: you're piecing things together alongside the characters. The vibe sits somewhere between Psycho-Pass's morally gray investigations and the chaotic ensemble energy of Durarara or Kekkai Sensen, but with its own identity rooted in literary references and layered power dynamics. If you liked any of those and want something that balances slick action with detective work and organized crime drama, this season rewards you whether you're a longtime fan or just curious about the franchise.

Ranpo really shines thru this season and the finale captures that feeling of pulling a rabbit out of the hat. Awesome ending
When in doubt, Ranpo san is going to figure out a scheme so they can overcome any obstacles coming their way. He devises a plan where he shows up to a broadcast and states rhe Decay of Angeles true motives. Though this, he creates a split in kinder among the citizens as half of them are stuck in status while the others decide to wake up for the first time. Beautiful moment at the end where Tachihara uses pure will to overcome the fate written by Fyodoor himself.
Serves as a stepping stone in Mushitaro’s development as he for once decides to help others at the request of his teacher. Loved the scene of Ango subtly letting them escape in order to allow them to find out the true nature of what is going on.
Wouldn’t truly be Bungo without a tragic backstory abd this time around, we get insight on Yosano previous affiliation to Mori San. You get to understand at how some of her manic traits came to life as we watch her life as a child medic cursed with the task of reviving her allies from near death continuously. It goes as far as to driving her closet friend to the brink of insanity and taking his life as a result.
With nowhere else to turn, an unelected ally saves the Agency from predetermined fate at the bads of the hunting dogs. Every single member is going through provokes of their own which really makes you think about how calculated Fyodor is. His ability to manipulate the outcome through one’s own tendencies and good will as all apart of his plan is telling to just how scary of an individual this is.
With a world altering page at play, the Agency quickly realize how dire their situation is as their are officially on governments watchlist. The introduction of Huntington Dogs was beautiful as they were deemed wirh the tasks of hunting the same “terrorist” who has saved thus place time and time again.
One of the most insane episodes of the series. The introduction of Decay of Angels was enough in itself but then we finally get to see what Fyodoor has been planning this whole time. After a dire warning from Ranpo to not engage, the Agency falls right into the trap and are now framed with the murder of elite officials as well as being pronounced the Decay of Angelsat the result of the page
With all the odds all stacked against Ranpo, he still drives to see it through to the end. Regardless of the how perfect a murder is, context is all Ranpo needs even when evidence is missing. What starts off as a joyful interaction turns into a tense situation as Ranpo slowly unveils he knows exactly who is responsible for the crime and the exact manner they were able to pull it off. He eventually takes matters into his own hands and backs the culprit into a psychological corner where they have to decide which outcome is best
All of Ranpo’s backstory holds weight current day as he’s faced with a problem that he’s never endured. For the first time ever in his life, he‘s not able to rely on his intellect in order to figure out this situation
Episode severs to prove Ranpo’s intellect even further as he purposely baits himself in order to figure out the true nature of the theater crime. The sombrr moment Fukuzawa and Ranpo shared really hit home because it’s almost as if it’s a father scolding their son for his reckless actions in regret of the possibility of losing them. It makes Ranpo childish antics much more impact because for once in his life, the Agency provides a place of escape from all the “monsters” Ranpo had endured as a result of his mind.
Love to look at this as the first case the Agency ever handled. We immediately see the opposition in manners of life between both Ranpo and Fukuzawa but quickly see how their chemistry strengthened throughout. One of my most memorable moments is Ranpo being able “to see” for the first time as the color palette changes from black and white as he’s had a skewed vision of the world up until this moment
Don’t think there has been a single flashback sequence that I haven’t throughly enjoyed. To not only see the origins of Fukuzawa but Ranpo as well, I couldn’t ask for more. Ranpo showcases just how unsettling his deductions skills are within the first couple minutes of screen time
The season builds toward a dramatic confrontation as multiple storylines collide. Plans long set in motion finally unfold, leaving the fate of the Agency hanging in the balance and setting the stage for even greater conflict ahead.
The conflict between the Agency and the Hunting Dogs reaches a critical point. Both sides clash with full force, revealing the terrifying power of the government’s elite enforcers.
With several Agency members imprisoned, a daring escape becomes their only hope. Clever planning and bold risks lead to a tense breakout attempt that pushes both their intelligence and teamwork to the limit.
Cornered and accused, Atsushi faces the emotional weight of the conflict. The episode explores his vulnerability while revealing how deeply the ongoing battle is affecting everyone involved.
As the conspiracy spreads, the Agency members are pushed into increasingly desperate circumstances. Illusions, deception, and shifting loyalties create an atmosphere where nothing can be trusted.
Atsushi and Akutagawa find themselves forced into an uneasy alliance as the situation grows dire. Their shared struggle against powerful enemies highlights the complicated bond between two rivals shaped by similar pain.
The elite government unit known as the Hunting Dogs enters the scene. Their overwhelming strength and strict sense of justice quickly turn them into terrifying adversaries for the Agency, raising the stakes dramatically.
Tension escalates when events spiral into chaos across Yokohama. The Agency struggles to keep control as their opponents tighten the web around them, leaving the members increasingly isolated and vulnerable.
