Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity officially premiered its first episode on July 25, 2026, and since its airing, it has constantly been one of the hottest topics on the internet. Especially with the recent episodes, if you are someone who surfs the internet, I am sure you have seen a lot of pictures of Orihime Inoue and Kurosaki Ichigo.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity goes by a few different names, sometimes it is called Bleach TYBW Part 4, or even Bleach: Sennen Kessen-hen - Kashin-tan, but all of them actually refer to the exact same thing. Unlike other posts, I will share my verdict right upfront: the latest installment of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity is definitely a masterpiece that everyone must check out this season.

The Calamity: The Unexpected Masterpiece Anime of Summer 2026

In this post, I will refer to Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War – The Calamity simply as The Calamity. Summer 2026 actually had a lot of great anime, including the historical series Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia, the returning classic The Ghost in the Shell, the beautiful romance anime The Ogre's Bride, and the return of the king of comedy anime, Grand Blue Season 3.

When these anime started airing, I truly thought that the anime of the season would be one of them, and I am sure I wasn't the only one. But as it turns out, the true king of this season is an anime we are already quite familiar with. Who could have thought? Especially since the other shows are so interesting and high quality, particularly Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia, which had been the one everyone was discussing for weeks.

As I mentioned earlier, The Calamity aired its first episode on July 25, 2026, which is actually a little late compared to other titles. Some of those shows had already aired 3 to 4 episodes when The Calamity suddenly entered the mix at the end of July. This is something worth keeping in mind, as it explains why we didn't hear much Bleach news throughout July and early August. But now, the internet has suddenly been flooded with news about The Calamity.

When I found out The Calamity had started airing, I didn't plan on giving it a try so quickly, since I wanted to check out other titles first and I had already read the manga. But while I was taking my time with other shows, everyone started talking about Bleach. Whether in Chinese, Japanese, or English communities, the discussions about Bleach never stopped. Seeing everyone talk about it made me really curious, so I gave it a shot, and it turns out I ended up thoroughly enjoying it and having a great time with The Calamity.

Top-Tier Animation: The Amazing Fights Between Shinigami and Quincy

For those who have watched Bleach but haven't started the Thousand-Year Blood War series yet, or if you aren't familiar with Bleach at all, this series mainly focuses on the endless battles between the Shinigami and Quincy. It might be hard to believe, but The Calamity Episode 1 picks up right in the middle of an incredibly intense fight, making it completely unputdownable once you start watching.

I am not exaggerating, once you give The Calamity a try, you will understand immediately. The entire animation has been executed with incredibly high quality, which ultimately makes almost every episode a must-watch. The movements are fluid, the backgrounds are amazing, and the character designs are fantastic! It truly feels like you are watching an anime movie.

If you want to know just how amazing the whole anime is, the answer might surprise you, but I strongly suggest everyone give Episode 4 a try. It truly shows you what makes this show so incredible. In Episode 4 of The Calamity, or Episode 44 overall in the Thousand-Year Blood War series, a certain character unlocks his adult form and delivers an absolute masterclass.

I feel bad for this character, he didn't do so well throughout the overall Bleach series, as he was always losing and screaming. He is also famous for constantly losing to the iconic villain, Sosuke Aizen, without really achieving anything. But in this episode, he finally shows us his true power. The action, the design, everything is almost perfect, we even get a new voice performance for him! If you are curious about who I'm talking about, this episode is a must-watch.

The True Thousand-Year Blood War: The Participation of a Legendary Figure

There are reasons why people love the Thousand-Year Blood War anime series so much, and one of them is the involvement of a certain legendary figure. Unlike many other anime adaptations, the entire Thousand-Year Blood War series isn't just made for fans worldwide, it also serves as an opportunity for the original author, Kubo Tite, to do things differently.

Since this post is about diving deep into Bleach, let me share some background on this epic title. The Bleach manga officially ended on August 22, 2016, so counting from now, it has been ten years since it wrapped up. Ever since Bleach was first serialized, it has been a massive hit, with fans all around the world.

For better or worse, because Bleach has so many fans, many of us, including myself, had high expectations for it and hoped it could reach even greater heights. It was only natural for us to feel that way. Unfortunately, due to health issues, Kubo Tite couldn't expand the Thousand-Year Blood War arc as much as he wanted in the manga, which ultimately led to an ending that left a lot of fans disappointed.

I believe Kubo Tite himself was not happy, or even satisfied, with the fact that the Thousand-Year Blood War arc disappointed fans, which is why he has been so heavily involved in the anime adaptation. In a recent interview between Kubo Tite and the anime director, he mentioned that he even sends storyboards and draft cuts directly to the director, something that is extremely rare for a manga artist to do. Just through this action alone, we can really tell how Kubo feels and see his passion for the anime. This is his great opportunity to show us the true Thousand-Year Blood War!

Beyond the Creator: The High Quality of the Voice Acting

A lot of people have put tremendous effort into the Thousand-Year Blood War anime series besides Tite Kubo. The next reason this show reached such an elite level isn't hard to guess: the incredible dedication of the voice actors. Starting with Masakazu Morita as Ichigo Kurosaki, once you give Thousand-Year Blood War a try, you will immediately realize that everyone involved put 100% into their performance.

The voice actors have truly given their best and brought these characters to life. Long before The Calamity, Masakazu Morita shared in an interview that the Thousand-Year Blood War anime gathered an extraordinary lineup of voice actors together in the studio. This was extremely rare for a recording session at the time because, after COVID-19, most anime productions moved to separate, individual recording sessions, yet Thousand-Year Blood War brought the cast back together, creating a totally different energy.

Ever since I started my Thousand-Year Blood War journey, I have been deeply impressed by the voice acting, especially for the greatest villain of the arc, Yhwach. This might border on spoilers for some, but trust me: Takayuki Sugō does an incredible job. His voice for Yhwach is just so cool, and he truly brings out the character's sheer cruelty.

If you were a Bleach fan before or have watched the series recently, you should actually already be familiar with Takayuki Sugō's voice. Beside Yhwach, he played another major role in Bleach, and there is a specific reason why he voices these two key characters. Since I don't want to spoil too much, pay close attention when you start your watch through—you definitely don't want to miss his incredible performance!

Beyond the Original Manga: Anime-Exclusive Scenes

From the animation quality to the stellar voice acting, every aspect of the Thousand-Year Blood War anime series is top-tier. Those elements alone are reason enough to give it a try, but there is actually one more major reason why people are so crazy about it, even though the original manga wrapped up almost ten years ago!

I briefly touched on this earlier, but the Thousand-Year Blood War anime series actually features a lot of anime-exclusive scenes. I'm not saying Tite Kubo did a bad job with the manga, it's just that he faced real health issues back then and had no choice but to wrap things up at the time. Now, after so many years, he finally has the chance to show us what the real Thousand-Year Blood War looks like.

Even in the very first part of Thousand-Year Blood War, we got anime-exclusive scenes showing the original Gotei 13, highlighting just how ridiculously powerful and ruthless they were. I can still remember when the anime revealed them: fans worldwide exploded into huge discussions because everyone was so satisfied and thrilled to see them. The only real complaint was that we immediately wanted even more scenes and backstory for the original Gotei 13 to fully appreciate how amazing they were!

Starting from that point, Tite Kubo has been showing us his true potential. Beyond the anime-exclusive scenes, he also prepared a massive 73-page special one-shot chapter titled "No Breaths from Hell", also known as the Hell arc. It is extremely intriguing, and I absolutely loved it. My only real complaint is similar to before: I just want to read the rest of the arc as fast as possible! According to recent rumors online, the Bleach manga might be making its comeback once Sakamoto Days wraps up, so we might finally be close to enjoying the manga once again.

Unlike many other series out there, The Calamity is so well-crafted that I honestly can't think of a single reason why anyone shouldn't dive into this masterpiece.

Personally, the only reason you might stay away from this masterpiece is if you truly hate shounen. No matter how amazing this anime is, at the end of the day, it is a shounen story. While that means millions of viewers are going to love it, it also means there are people who just aren't into the genre. If you really can't stand shounen tropes, then unfortunately this might not be the anime for you. But for everyone else, please trust me and give this series a try, you are going to have an incredible experience!
