Synopsis
Yuzu Shinonome's family treats her like she's invisible. Her sister Karin married a powerful fox spirit, which brought the family status and prosperity, and now everyone reminds Yuzu daily that she doesn't measure up. She's the overlooked sibling in a world where ayakashi, supernatural beings from Japanese folklore: live alongside humans, and where being chosen as an ayakashi's bride is basically hitting the jackpot. Then one day, Reiya Kiryuuin, heir to a prestigious oni clan, shows up and tells Yuzu she's the bride he's been searching for. Suddenly the girl nobody wanted is at the center of the ayakashi world's attention, and she has to figure out what that means for her, her family, and this centuries-old supernatural society she's been pulled into. The setup is very much a Japanese folklore Cinderella story, neglected girl, unexpected proposal, a whole new world opening up, but it's grounded in some genuinely interesting family dynamics and questions about self-worth. If you liked the human-meets-supernatural romance of Kamisama Kiss or the slow-burn emotional weight of The Ancient Magus' Bride, this is in that lane. There's also a Natsume's Book of Friends quality to how the show treats its ayakashi world-building, where the coexistence between humans and spirits feels lived-in rather than just decorative. The tone leans romantic and warm, with enough personal stakes around Yuzu's growth to keep things from feeling too fluffy.

It's a decent enough opening episode, but the romance seems problematic so far.
Karin watching her reflection and calling herself better than Yuzu right before everything crashes down is such good irony. The show earned that fall even if the episode stalled

I fast forwarded most of Karin's scenes and I don't feel bad about it. We waited ten episodes for Yuzu to be happy and they give us the villain's childhood. The scene where Yota tells her she's not the bride anymore? Good. That's the only part worth watching
Yota bawling while telling Karin she's not his bride anymore hit harder than I expected. Dude genuinely loved her and she threw it away. That part got me
My favorite beat was Yuzu finally telling her family the truth and getting shoved for it. She spent ten episodes silent and this is how they answer her. I felt sick during that whole scene
I don't care how sad her childhood was. Watching the parents count the debt Yota paid off while Yuzu watches in the background made me want to throw something. Those two deserve every bit of what's coming
That staircase moment had me shouting at my screen. Reiya catching Yuzu out of thin air while Karin just stood there was the whole season in one image. Done with Karin after that.
the way Karin tells Yuzu to smile while Yuzu is standing there in socks full of holes. that was colder than anything the villains said all season
Twenty minutes of Karin backstory when we all knew she was awful already. The dolphin plushie scene was brutal though. Still felt like a stall before the finale
