Synopsis
Watanuki Kimihiro has been plagued by spirits for as long as he can remember, relentless ones that refuse to leave him alone. To get rid of this curse, he's stuck working for Yuuko Ichihara, a sake-loving witch who runs a shop that grants wishes, but only if you can pay the price. That price is never money. It's always something personal, something equivalent to what you're asking for, and it's almost never what you'd expect. xxxHOLiC◆Kei picks up right where the first season left off, but the tone shifts noticeably darker. The quirky supernatural errands are still there, and Watanuki still bickers with his deadpan rival Doumeki in ways that are genuinely funny, but the mysteries this time carry more weight. There's a stronger thread connecting everything: questions about fate, about whether coincidences actually exist, and about what Watanuki's relationships with Doumeki and his crush Himawari are really built on. CLAMP's art style translates beautifully here, all impossibly long limbs and swirling smoke, courtesy of Production I.G. The 13-episode run keeps things tight with no filler. If you liked the atmospheric, episodic spirit encounters in Natsume's Book of Friends or the eerie folklore vibes of Mushishi, this hits a similar nerve but with more humor and a sharper ongoing plot. Fans of Mononoke's surreal visual storytelling will feel at home too. Fair warning: it connects to Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle in ways that actually matter, so that rabbit hole goes deep if you want it to.

akumapulse★★★★★AnimeI found xxxHOLiC Kei to be a much more focused and emotionally mature continuation of the first season. Rather than simply repeating the episodic supernatural formula, it gradually shifted toward a more connected story where strange encounters carried greater consequences for the characters. I still got the familiar mix of supernatural mystery, dark humor, and everyday situations, but the season felt more interested in how those experiences shaped the characters over time. The writing stood out to me the most. The supernatural stories rarely felt like they were simply about ghosts, curses, or unexplained phenomena. Instead, they often reflected human weaknesses such as loneliness, jealousy, insecurity, obsession, curiosity, and the desire to avoid responsibility. This gave the stories a psychological quality and made the supernatural elements feel like extensions of existing problems rather than the true source of them. I also thought the character development was stronger than in the first season. The protagonist gradually became more aware of himself and his place within the supernatural world, while his relationships became more complicated and meaningful. Conversations, disagreements, and seemingly small moments increasingly carried consequences into later episodes. The supporting cast benefited from this stronger continuity as well, with their relationships feeling more genuine rather than simply recurring from episode to episode. The humor remained one of the show's greatest strengths. I enjoyed the exaggerated reactions and comedic situations, especially when they contrasted with the darker material. The series could move from something unsettling to something ridiculous without completely destroying its atmosphere. That unusual balance of comedy, melancholy, and supernatural tension remained a major part of its identity. Visually, I found the season just as distinctive. The elongated character designs, unusual proportions, dramatic framing, empty spaces, and striking compositions created an almost surreal storybook quality. I especially liked how the direction created unease through stillness, shadows, lighting, unusual perspectives, and silence rather than relying on conventional horror techniques. The animation itself wasn't the main attraction, but the art direction and atmosphere were consistently memorable. The visual style wasn't flawless, though. At times, the artwork felt stronger than the material itself. A beautiful composition or elaborate design could make a simple scene feel more substantial than the writing actually was. Still, as a visual experience, the season remained highly recognizable and effective. The soundtrack complemented the atmosphere extremely well. I found the music effective because it rarely overwhelmed the scenes, instead blending mystery, melancholy, humor, and unease. I also appreciated the use of silence, which sometimes made supernatural encounters more uncomfortable than an obvious horror score would have. The pacing was stronger overall, but I still noticed some unevenness. The beginning established a clearer sense of direction, while the later episodes benefited from the accumulated character development and emotional consequences. The middle section occasionally lost momentum, with some stories following familiar patterns that felt more like delays than meaningful detours. I also felt that certain emotional developments were rushed. Some moments worked well, but others could have benefited from more buildup. Despite that, I found the emotional material considerably stronger than in the first season. The series became more interested in connection, sacrifice, choice, consequence, responsibility, and the cost of getting what someone wants. I especially appreciated that the strongest emotional moments were often quiet conversations and subtle realizations rather than dramatic confrontations. I also liked that the series trusted me to accept uncertainty. Not every supernatural rule was explained, and not every question received a clear answer. While that occasionally frustrated me, I felt the ambiguity suited the series and helped preserve its mysterious atmosphere. Overall, I considered xxxHOLiC Kei a significant improvement and a more confident continuation. It retained the strange humor, supernatural mysteries, memorable visuals, and eccentric character dynamics of the first season while giving them greater emotional and thematic purpose. For me, this was the point where xxxHOLiC became more than an episodic supernatural comedy and developed into a character-driven psychological drama. It remained strange, funny, eerie, and occasionally frustrating, but it also felt more purposeful and emotionally resonant.
