I went into xxxHOLiC expecting a slow-burn supernatural series, and that was exactly what I got. Instead of focusing on constant action or traditional horror, it built its identity around strange encounters, human weaknesses, and the consequences of people's choices. Each story felt like its own supernatural lesson, exploring obsession, greed, loneliness, and the temptation to take an easy way out. The atmosphere was one of my favorite aspects. Its distinctive visual style immediately separated it from other anime. The extremely tall and thin character designs, dramatic poses, heavy shadows, and surreal environments created a dreamlike feeling caught between a nightmare and a fairy tale. The supernatural elements were rarely presented directly, making the uncertainty even more effective. I especially liked how the series handled its supernatural stories. Rather than relying on jump scares or conventional monsters, it created tension through situations rooted in recognizable human behavior. Many supernatural problems connected to people's desires, habits, fears, or decisions. This made the horror feel more personal because the real danger was less about the supernatural and more about what people were willing to do to get what they wanted. The central character was another important part of the experience. I enjoyed watching him gradually become more capable and emotionally aware while being pushed outside his comfort zone. His exaggerated reactions provided comedy, although the overreactions sometimes became repetitive. His relationships with the other characters helped balance his personality through the contrast between his nervous energy and calmer personalities. The mysterious woman at the center of the story was easily one of the strongest elements. She was entertaining, unpredictable, elegant, and occasionally intimidating. I never felt like I completely understood her, which made her fascinating. Her philosophy surrounding wishes, choices, consequences, and the price of getting what you want gave the series its identity. She could be playful one moment and serious the next. The episodic structure was both a strength and a weakness. Some individual stories were genuinely memorable, especially when focusing on uncomfortable aspects of human behavior. However, the formula could become repetitive as the season progressed. Larger mysteries were introduced gradually, but the series often returned to standalone stories before building much momentum, making the pacing feel slow at times. That slower approach wasn't always a problem. I appreciated that the series allowed stories to breathe instead of rushing toward the next major development. It trusted the audience to sit with ambiguity and interpret events without explaining everything immediately. When an episode worked, this approach made the experience feel atmospheric and thought-provoking. Visually, the series was one of its biggest successes. Unconventional character designs, flowing clothing, dark environments, and surreal imagery gave it a unique identity. The supernatural setting felt both inviting and unsettling. Even when animation wasn't particularly dynamic, art direction carried the atmosphere. The supernatural creature designs were more inconsistent. Some were unsettling and memorable, while others felt ordinary. I found the psychological side of the stories much more effective than the creature designs themselves. The series was at its best when strange imagery represented something emotionally recognizable. The soundtrack complemented the atmosphere well. It stayed subtle rather than dominating scenes, suiting the quiet and mysterious tone. The music helped create the feeling of being somewhere removed from reality, although few individual tracks stayed with me afterward. It was effective mood music, but visuals and storytelling left a stronger impression. Emotionally, the series was strongest when exploring the consequences of people's choices. Not every story ended with a simple solution, and I appreciated that. Some situations were unsettling, others sad, and a few surprisingly funny. The combination of comedy, supernatural mystery, and darker themes prevented the series from becoming too heavy. Overall, I found xxxHOLiC to be a memorable and unusually atmospheric supernatural anime. Its greatest strengths were its visual identity, philosophical themes, eccentric characters, and ability to turn ordinary human flaws into supernatural stories. Its biggest weakness was pacing, particularly when the episodic formula became repetitive. I watched it for the atmosphere, strange encounters, uncomfortable ideas, and questions surrounding desire and consequence. While not every episode was equally strong, the series developed a personality that felt completely its own, making it an experience that stayed with me.

Our season ends with a main character study! It’s nice to get a look at Watanuki’s world before Yuko and friends came crashing in 😆 The vibes are pretty light, probably ‘cause the anime wants us to get a breather from the previous heavy eps 😅 Overall, I think this entire anime holds up pretty well and also serves as a pretty nostalgic time capsule~

What a way to end or conclude the season! A special episode for me! Felt like an OVA! Hoping the next season is more intriguing and has a straight forward plot! The small flash back of Watanuki made all the difference! Watanuki making multiple friends and such!

Very emotional episode! My emotions and feeling are f'ed up! Sad, thrilled, intrigued and happy at the same time! I just really want to know who that person is! Really loved the from the previous episode, they focused on Watanuki since we're reaching the near end also!

Thrilling episode! It's sad at the same time intriguing since I do not know the source of the sickness! Now another cliffhanger here! Thought they would finish a plot episode but I think they extended it! Pretty excited for the next one!

Superstitions! The episode focused on that and as a Filipino, we here have a lot of superstitions though I do not believe in those! Even if I don't believe them, there are lessons to take from this episode and when I say lessons, I mean A LOT of lessons! Also this is probably the most emotional episode for me!

It's the valentine's episode! One of the event I am waiting for in this anime! But of course the balance between solving a client's issue is there! The little extra of minimal romance brings me joy! The only thing disappoints me is the soundtrack does not fit the small romance at all! Though plot wise, it's good but could be better. All I can say it is a terrifying yet sad episode!

Comedic episode! Probably taking a break from the plots we have! I wasn't expecting the plot to be like this, I'd say this is a fan service. Also this Christmas episode is the start of the winter season probably! The food they ate at the near end made me crave hot pot as soon as I saw it!

OMG, this ep has such complex feelings. I was SO sad while watching Watanuki 😭 You know that it’s getting real when the usual comedy beats are missing 😥 The emotional weight of this ep is very heavy. And it circles back to the recurring theme: People have to make choices, and those choices will ALWAYS have consequences. Simply a beautiful episode…

We’re nearing the season finale, so the story’s getting serious! 😯 The very Watanuki-centric story here is not self-contained. This ep’s energy is mostly calming and the gentle vibe honestly made me want to cry… but also it has an ominous undertone. It makes me worried about what will happen 🥺

This ep’s a cultural lesson on superstitions. As someone who enjoys a bit of anthropology, this ep is good, but bittersweet… 🥹 Whether or not you believe in old wives’ tales, this is a must-watch. It’s simply so bizarre (in a good way) and thought-provoking (in the best way)!! Side note: Gochisousama for the funny DouWata 🙏

DON’T MISS THIS EP ‘cause Yuko the witch is back in business~!! 😍 This is another one of my FAVORITE stories of this season. It follows the best formula: a sketchy client, paranormal shenanigans, and an incredible conclusion that shows us this anime’s favorite theme: All of our actions have GRAVITY... No cap, this is a PEAK EPISODE that balances the darkness and humor~

The shift to winter is pretty cool (hehe)~ ❄ This episode is mostly chill character interactions and silly antics in the snow. Not really the most important episode, to be honest... But it’s alright to watch if you want a good laugh lol 🤣

The lore in this episode is FANTASTIC~!! 🥹 I’m glad that this story is yokai-focused again… any ep in this anime that has Japanese folklore feels like such a fun fever dream LOL. And a lot of great creative direction in this ep too: there was definitely extra care put into the composition of the scenes.

The premise of this story is great! The catch of this story just keeps me thinking lol... Yuko’s truly a wise lady when she really gets serious~ 🕶 The immersive sound effects and the thought-provoking dialogue are both pretty interesting as well and add to the excellent atmosphere. Slow but solid ep that’s a breath of fresh air!!

This episode feels chill lol~ Watanuki’s adventure is relatively low-stakes, but it’s very much rooted in the supernatural. It kinda feels like a folk tale imo. Just like the title of this ep says, there’s a sweet reunion in this story. Watch to see the cute moments! 🥰

This is the sequel to the last ep~! I think this story nails the idea of words having “power.” The meaningful lesson in this tale of twins is something we can all reflect on and something we could definitely apply irl, whether or not we believe in the supernatural 😊

Probably the most exciting episode for me. Animation had a budget and did not cut-cost! AS observed in previous episodes, background characters do not have color and they're just pure white. Here looks like they had a budget since they are part of the plot? Anyway it's a good upgrade! Also this episode made me realize that the plot is deeper and it's not just per episode story!

For me, this episode got me hooked because some life lessons here were relatable about life and how we balance it. What bore me is that majority of the 20 minute episode is full on conversations and dialogue and not much of content. So all in all it's pretty mid!

Now that the returning character had more screen time, I realized that she is adorable AF! Also I'm getting this feeling that Zashiki Warashi likes Watanuki! Now I do not know who to ship to Watanuki! Also I'd really appreciate it if they had better soundtrack for specific scenes like the romance ones!
