Episode Context

Coming off Episode 4's back-to-back encounters with the slit-mouthed woman and the rokurokubi, which left Oichi on the losing end of at least one clash, Episode 5 uses that setback as quiet motivation for her more assertive turn here. The bakeneko conflict introduces a new category of supernatural threat and signals the season broadening its yokai catalogue beyond the school setting. Sitting at the series' midpoint, this episode marks a tonal pivot toward ensemble spotlight stories before the back half likely raises the overall stakes.
