Finding the uncut version makes a difference, because the censorship in the old releases really hides how gnarly and messed up the director wanted this to be

My skin was crawling during the hospital scenes and I think the body horror here is some of the most creative stuff I have ever seen in old school animation

The scale of the war feels massive when you see all these different demon factions fighting to claim the Overfiend for themselves

That sequence where the demons corner Akemi is one of the most uncomfortable things ever put on screen and it really shows how hopeless this world feels for humans

I spent the whole time wondering if Nagumo is a savior or a monster, because the way he interacts with the Makai is violent and disturbing. My favorite moment was seeing Megumi try to keep everything together, while the world starts rotting around them. It is gross and cruel but you cannot look away from the chaos

You can really feel the dread when the prophecy starts to come true and the animation for the monster transformations is so fluid and disgusting at the same time

It is crazy how much darker the anime is compared to the original manga since the director just added so much more brutality and twisted stuff to the plot

I cannot believe what they did to Akemi in this part of the story and it makes me feel so bad for her while Nagumo just stands there as the world burns

The tentacle scenes are legendary for a reason but they are still really hard to watch and the way the Makai demons use them is genuinely terrifying
kawauso_knight_43's avatar
kawauso_knight_43
The way the bodies just tear apart and morph into those gross demon shapes is something else and Nagumo just looks like he has no idea what he is becoming

you can see why this show changed everything back in the day because the art style is incredibly detailed and the way the makai creatures look is pure nightmare fuel for anyone watching

nagumo being the supposed savior while everything around him just rots is such a dark take and seeing the city start to crumble makes the nihilistic tone of this story feel so heavy

the mythology about the choujin and the balance of the three worlds is deep, but the level of violence against the female characters is just too much to handle sometimes

The ending of that classroom fight was so dark and you can tell this series is not interested in traditional heroes or happy endings at all
yukio_yukimura_490's avatar

I feel sick after that scene with the tentacles in the alleyway and I really wish they stayed focused on the prophecy stuff because the lore about the three realms is actually interesting
cwunched's avatar

the way the demon world and the human world are bleeding together is actually terrifying and the animation for the monster transformations is so smooth it makes the whole thing feel way too real for comfort

Seeing the different demon factions fight over Nagumo while he stays a complete moron really highlights the tragic nihilism of this entire prophecy

The designs for the Makai are unique, and the visceral animation during the battles makes the apocalyptic stakes feel much more real than the first episode

I was stunned by how visceral the demon transformations were because the art style makes the body horror look so much more disturbing than most modern stuff

That scene in the school is haunting and it sets such a bleak tone for the rest of the episode while the world starts falling apart

EPISODE CONTEXT

Following 'Birth of the Overfiend,' which established the three-realm mythology and introduced the key players, this episode serves as the arc's pressure-building midpoint — expanding the lore around the Ultra God while tightening the screws on Amanojaku and Nagumo's entanglements. It carries the weight of a bridge chapter tasked with deepening investment before the finale. Everything here points toward the climactic confrontations promised in 'Final Inferno,' making it an essential, not skippable, piece of the three-part whole.
