Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend
Oshimeter
Synopsis
An ancient cycle completing itself every 3,000 years is supposed to result in a being called the Choujin being reborn to unite three hidden worlds: humans, demons, and half-beast creatures. The problem is, nobody agrees on whether that's actually a good thing. Amano Jyaku, a Juujinkai who's been hunting for the Choujin for centuries, thinks he's finally found the one: Tatsuo Nagumo, a completely oblivious high school kid whose main hobby is chasing girls. Meanwhile, the demon faction has a very different read on the prophecy: they think Nagumo isn't a savior, he's a threat, and they're not interested in waiting around to find out who's right. This is a 3-episode OVA from 1987 that essentially built the template for erotic horror anime. Don't go in expecting a slow burn, but it escalates fast, blending supernatural mythology with visceral action and some genuinely unsettling imagery. The animation has that rough, detailed quality specific to late-80s OVAs, and the story underneath the chaos is more layered than it first appears. If you've seen Wicked City and want something that goes further into dark territory, this is the natural next step. Fans of Demon Beast Invasion will also recognize the DNA. It's not comfortable watching, and that's kind of the point: the world Nagumo is unknowingly at the center of is brutal and morally murky from the very first episode.

Megumi is a total wild card and the fact that she is related to Amano makes their search for the Overfiend even weirder than it already was
I went in expecting something weird but the jump from a teen romance to that brutal assault in the city was way too fast for my brain to handle and the lore about the three realms is actually cool but the sheer amount of gore and the grosser sexual scenes makes it hard to focus on the prophecy stuff at all
The way the music stays all bouncy and light while everything turns into a bloody nightmare is the most unsettling part of this whole thing
I can see why this got banned in like every country because those tentacle scenes are genuinely hard to look at even for a horror fan
Nagumo just seems like a regular loser so seeing those demons go after him was a lot and that elevator scene is actually insane
You really feel the age of the animation during the action scenes, but the sheer level of violence makes it feel modern in a sick way and it is so nihilistic and nasty
I finally tracked down an uncut version of this and it lived up to the reputation. The hand-drawn detail on the gore is actually incredible, even if the content is hard to watch at times. I keep thinking about that prophecy and how Amano seems so desperate to protect a guy who has no idea what is happening to him
Nagumo being a total slacker while everyone is fighting over his soul is such a weird dynamic and it makes the world feel even more unhinged than it already does
Seeing the Makai come out of nowhere to attack a high school is so dark and the atmosphere is just pure dread from the second those tentacles show up on the screen
That prophecy about the Overfiend is so ominous and it is hard to tell if Nagumo is going to save the world or just finish destroying what is left of it
Poor Akemi did nothing to deserve that level of trauma and my skin was crawling during that whole sequence in the building because it felt so hopeless and mean
Amano searching for 300 years just to find a guy like Nagumo is actually hilarious and he seems like such a loser but then everything around him just starts exploding into gore
I was not prepared for how fast this went from zero to a hundred and one minute Nagumo is just a student and the next I am watching some of the most graphic stuff ever
The hand drawn art in this is so detailed and gritty and you can tell they put so much work into the disgusting monster designs even when the screen is just panning over a still
That transition from a normal school day to the absolute madness with the tentacles was insane and the way those demons just tear through everything is genuinely terrifying
That transition from a normal school setting to total carnage caught me off guard and the detail on the gore is really gruesome
Amano Jyaku is such a cool lead and I love how he just kicks that demon in the face during the first encounter
The animation for the demon transformations looks amazing and fluid but the amount of sexual violence is a lot to handle for a first episode
The way the prophecy about the Choujin frames Nagumo as this total loser is actually kind of funny, but the moment the demons started tearing through people it got dark fast. It is way more intense than I thought it would be from the title and that elevator scene is going to be stuck in my head for a long time.
I never expected those tentacles to go that far and my brain is still trying to process the pool scene
