Trigun Stargaze Episode 11: I Miss You

The episode opens with a chilling tableau: a close-up of red geraniums, then a memory. A young Vash stares at cylindrical tanks, within which his brother, Knives, floats, speaking of sadness and pain. Vash silently vows to bear it all, a promise he makes to his brother and, in his young mind, to everyone. The glowing orb containing his image, his youthful face, cements this impossible ambition: a world where no one ever cries. The scene shifts, abruptly, to a blue liquid, a different tank, a new mystery.

The desert sun beats down as Legato Bluesummers hovers, a skeletal figure of malice awaiting his master's approval. Knives watches, thrilled, declaring that Vash has finally, after 150 years, truly tried to kill a human. Vash, anguished and defeated, lies trapped, witnessing Legato's serene, almost joyful sacrifice as Knives severs his head. Knives tosses the head aside, a perverse ritual complete, proclaiming his own rebirth and a new world, leaving Vash in despair.

Just as Knives prepares to deliver a final, annihilating blow, a missile shrieks across the sky, forcing Knives to retaliate. From the ensuing smoke and fire emerges Nicholas D. Wolfwood, wounded but defiant, his massive Punisher gun raised. He screams Knives' name, urging a dazed Vash to focus on the present. Vash, shielding himself, slowly looks up, fear warring with a familiar determination.

Meanwhile, Milly Thompson, cheerfully oblivious to mortal peril, races across the desert on a motorcycle towards the looming Ark. Meryl Stryfe clings on, rifle in hand, her determination tempered by exasperation at Milly's reckless joy. They speed towards the enormous, ruined ship, a speck against the vastness, a vivid contrast to the grim battle unfolding elsewhere. They crash-land onto a platform, Meryl's fear met by Milly's undimmed enthusiasm.

Vash fires his gun, a small orb hitting Knives and stunning him momentarily. Tendrils erupt from Vash's back, mirroring Knives' own grotesque transformation, as Vash vows to stop the "Big Fall." The ground shatters, massive organic structures rising to ensnare Vash and Wolfwood. Knives then calmly traps Vash in a central chamber, promising a paradise for their "brethren" where Vash will no longer have to see humanity's harsh reality.

Milly and Meryl cautiously peer into the chamber, discovering Legato at a grand piano. His skeletal fingers play a familiar, sorrowful children's tune. Milly joyfully remarks on his happiness, on his wish coming true, as Legato's body glows intensely, tendrils receding, transforming. The title card, "#11 I MISS YOU," punctuates Milly's echoing, bittersweet pronouncement of "Happy."

A flashback to a solitary, hopeful young Rem Saverem gives way to Knives watching holographic maps fill with red dots: the approaching Earth Fleet. He activates the Mothership, the Ark, which descends to connect with the central structure of Oktovarn. A powerful beam of light rains down, transforming the desert into a vibrant, glowing cityscape, a miracle of destruction in waiting. Knives, now fully connected to the Plants, stands ready, his eyes burning with cold resolve.

Milly and Meryl navigate the Ark's red-lit corridors, worried for Vash but resolved. Roberto De Niro, observing a holographic map of the approaching fleet, emphasizes that Vash's struggle is about fighting, not giving up. He holds onto hope that Knives' attempt to convert Vash offers a crucial opening. Milly and Meryl exchange a look of determined belief, ready to contribute in their own way.

Deep within the Ark, Milly and Meryl find themselves in a chamber of glowing cylindrical tanks, which Meryl realizes are the Plants. A young Rem, with chilling red eyes and devoid of emotion, floats among them, speaking in a cold voice. She unleashes deadly nails, forcing the journalists to flee on their motorcycle. Milly takes the brunt of an attack, then finds herself facing Rem alone. Instead of fighting, Milly compassionately embraces the tormented entity, offering comfort and promising to end her loneliness and sadness.

Knives, engulfed in golden light, transforms fully, his skeletal body now connected by tendrils to the Mothership above. With a primal scream, he unleashes a devastating beam into space, obliterating the Earth Fleet in a fiery inferno. He watches, cold and triumphant, as the planet's surface scars and the fleet becomes wreckage. He has achieved his ultimate goal, creating a massive swirling vortex in space, a gateway to his new, horrifying reality.

Amidst the devastation, Vash is surrounded by the spectral forms of the fallen, including Rem. Her voice echoes in his mind, urging him not to give up. With a powerful aura, his eyes burning, Vash clenches his fists, resolving to avenge them, to fight for her memory. He stands, radiating immense power, facing a similarly glowing Knives, the fate of what remains of humanity resting on this final, epic confrontation.

The battle's immediate aftermath is left unseen, replaced by the quiet, stark image of Vash's footprints in the desert sand. He walks alone towards the horizon, a solitary figure against an uncertain future. The sun sets, then stars appear, and he walks among glowing blue flowers. A single white feather floats down, landing in his outstretched hand, and he looks at it with a small, poignant smile. The scene ends with a rainbow over a ruined city, suggesting both loss and fragile hope.
