Trigun Stargaze Episode 12: Quo Vadis

The episode opens with a chilling whisper, then abstract forms coalesce into Knives Million. He is partially encased in organic structures, his body skeletal and metallic. Knives screams into the vast, dark sky, his green eyes glowing with anguish as black, vein-like lines pulse across his face. It is a raw depiction of suffering, showing a being consumed by his own power and pain.

In a control room, Luida, Meryl Stryfe, Roberto De Niro, and a younger Elendira observe a holographic display showing the same organic structures. Luida realizes the Plants are communicating, their voices a desperate call. Roberto apologizes to Elendira for her loneliness, revealing a poignant backstory. Meryl urges Luida to play the Plant's song, believing it can rally their strength against Knives, and Elendira begins to hum the melody, a fragile hope emerging.

Spaceships shaped like elegant petals fire energy beams at a distant planet. Knives, still crystalline and thorny, is their target, screaming as energy pulses around him. Countless ships unleash purple energy, striking the planet and Knives' form. A tense countdown initiates, each number echoing the desperation of the attacking forces, all aimed at destroying the tortured Plant.

A massive purple beam hits the planet's surface, intensifying and spreading destruction. People on the ground look up in terror, their city’s massive Plant structure beginning to glow ominously. Fragments of the Plant rupture and fall, chaos engulfing the streets. Engineers watch helplessly as their instruments show critical damage, screams filling the air.

Legato Bluesummers and Zazie the Beast join the assault, firing barrages at Knives, whose core glows with blue energy. His body breaks apart, only to transform into a massive, winged, black creature hovering above the planet. Knives expands further, becoming an ethereal being stretching across the planet's orbit, absorbing energy and spaceships. He then becomes a flaming meteor, hurtling towards the planet, screaming.

Luida desperately pleads with the Plants, her voice cracking with emotion, as Knives' face is shown in agony. A glowing, tree-like symbol expands around Elendira, transforming her into a radiant, ethereal being of light. Her form then encompasses the spaceships, which glow golden and push back Knives' attack. Elendira becomes a giant, blossoming flower, releasing smaller, glowing flower-shaped ships into the starry sky, bringing a sense of celestial peace.

Knives, still a flaming meteor, plunges towards the planet, his face distorted in a scream of pain. Vash appears, reaching out, desperate to stop him, declaring, "Not yet! Everything… to nothing!" He embraces Knives, absorbing the blue energy, but Knives struggles, screaming in denial. Vash looks up with determination, then down in sadness, meteors still falling around them.

Vash tells Knives it is over, but Knives, enraged, screams he will not kneel and will fulfill his mission. Vash fires a continuous blue energy beam from his arm-gun at the spiky, multi-limbed monster Knives has become. The rapid-fire clash pushes Knives back, unable to land a decisive blow. Vash fires a final, powerful blast, sending Knives falling towards the planet's surface.

On the red planet, Knives lies defeated, and Vash reaches out with a grief-stricken face. Flashbacks show Rem Saverem with young Nai (Vash) and Knives, her words of hope for humanity. Vash remembers Rem's sacrifice and the weight Knives carried alone, telling his brother, "He bore it all alone! And I… I knew nothing! I’m so sorry!" Screaming in agony, Vash plunges towards the planet with Knives, transforming into a giant, glowing blue flower, absorbing meteors to soften their impact.

Meryl reassures Elendira that Vash will not kill Knives, because that is not his way. Vash's eye glows purple as he transforms into an Elendira-like Plant, surrounded by glowing butterflies and falling feathers. He becomes a radiant being, his face etched with pain and desperation, as he fully embodies the Plant. His hand meets Elendira's, their eyes meeting, and he is enveloped in gratitude. Later, Elendira holds a feather, realizing the Plants may be dying from loneliness without human connection, while Knives' ghostly voice whispers, "I’m sorry."

Legato sits in a grand hall, surrounded by falling white feathers, holding a framed photograph of young Vash, Knives, and Rem. He cries out in agony, the weight of their shared past evident. In the city, people look up in awe as countless white feathers fall around them. Children try to catch them, a young boy whispering "Thank you" as he holds one, a quiet moment of grace after immense destruction.

A spaceship crashes, shaking the Plant chamber, and Knives is seen screaming in agony, glowing purple. He fiercely declares he will not kneel, looking at Vash with determination. Knives begins to absorb Vash, pulling him towards a portal, an attempt to enter their 'true world.' But then, Knives pushes Vash away, screaming for him not to suffer, stating, "The one who should suffer last is me!" Vash embraces Knives, absorbing the purple energy, and Knives fades away, leaving Vash in a golden form.

Vash, in his golden form, falls towards the planet, creating a new, glowing sun on the horizon. The landscape transforms, rain falling on the desert, creating a serene lake and a rainbow. The narrator explains that four years after 'Lost July,' the planet, 'Ju Lai,' is reborn from hell, with water flowing and plants growing, thanks to the 'last of the millions of Knives.' Most residents board immigrant ships, leaving a few to tend the new green world, including Meryl, Roberto, and Elendira.

Meryl decides to continue recording the 150-year journey of the brothers, with Elendira enthusiastically joining her. Roberto, revealed as Ace from Bernardelli Communication, praises Meryl's articles and their shared mission to convey hope. Vash is seen in a peaceful field, holding a pot of red flowers, then playing the piano, reminiscing. His friends arrive, insisting he cannot stay alone. Vash is given a new red coat, and with his friends, rides across the desert, holding his red flowers, looking up at falling white feathers, ready for a new journey.
