Toaru Anbu no Item
Oshimeter
Synopsis
Don't let the gleaming tech and esper research programs fool you — Academy City has a dark side, literally. There's a shadow world of covert ops, assassinations, and power plays that never make the news. Toaru Anbu no Item drops you right into that underworld through the eyes of ITEM, a four-woman kill squad doing the city's dirty work. Shizuri Mugino is a Level 5 esper who can melt through just about anything, Frenda Seivelun rigs things to explode in creative ways, Saiai Kinuhata is basically a walking tank, and Rikou Takitsubo tracks targets with her esper ability so nobody gets away. They're not heroes — they're operatives, and the jobs they take aren't exactly morally clean. The early episodes dig into how the team came together and the kind of missions that force people in their position to make ugly choices. If you liked the morally gray mercenary energy of Black Lagoon or the shadowy esper intrigue of Darker than Black, this is working in that same space but with the Toaru universe's deep power system backing it up. J.C.Staff is handling the animation, and given the source material leans heavy on fights with distinct ability matchups, that should translate well. It's a grittier corner of a world you might already know from Index or Railgun, told from the perspective of people who were always lurking just off-screen.
