The shift in military warfare versus the enduring samurai code gives this episode such tragic gravity, and Izumi's quiet resolve anchors everything. The atmosphere in here is so heavy and beautiful.
This is a solemnly slow paced episode, which essentially elevates the emotional atmosphere of this finale. It offers a heartwarming mood of closure after the heavily political plotlines, creating a wonderful tonal shift after the overarching progression of every era featured across the series.
An emotional episode, full of reflections on the past, present, and future. The Meiji era has begun, and therefore the clashes between the Shinsengumi and the anti-shogun forces continue, though the Shinsengumi is increasingly weakened. We see Izumi drifting through life, gazing at the sea with no further aspirations, and Okita suffering from an illness. It's slow-paced, canon within the story, and quite moving to watch.
