Okay, that slight flicker in the Emperor's eyes at the very end really got me thinking. He *has* to see by now just how much Maomao’s ingenuity is propping up this entire imperial court, and frankly, I'm a little surprised it took him this long to fully clue in.

It was about time Lihua grew a spine and handled her business because Lady Shin has been a problem since the very first episode. Seeing Maomao trace the poisoning back to the same cinnabar powder issue was a nice callback and how she used those trade goods to expose the truth felt very smart and grounded in her character today.
