EPISODE REVIEWS

Making ice from saltpeter to save Xiaolan was so smart and it was great seeing a disaster turn into a treat for the consort and Xiaolan looked so happy in the end

Episode Context

Sitting at the midpoint of Season 2's 24-episode run, 'Ice' arrives as a palate cleanser after the eerie tension of 'The Dancing Ghost' arc. It functions as a deliberate narrative exhale, spotlighting Maomao's ingenuity and interpersonal bonds in a lower-stakes setting. This calm is strategic, the following episode, 'Festering Resentment,' signals a sharp pivot into deeper palace conspiracies and more personal stakes for Maomao.
