Dialogue-heavy but engaging, this episode uses subtle visual storytelling, like repeated handling of small objects, to reinforce tension beneath the surface.

I thought this episode would be horror again, but it turned out to be very emotional and really important for one of the characters. I had mixed feelings while watching it. It wasn’t very engaging, but it wasn’t boring either, it was just right.

Well for once, one of the least acknowledged character finally gets the spotlight and we even get an emotional backstory from it. Changes are coming in the royal palace, and everyone seems to be on edge. And at the very first slight of inattention, trouble. Rough times ahead.

Yet another creepy episode! I'm on 50/50 with this. I slightly enjoyed it and at the same time. kind of bored me. Why? It's because we had a similar episode already. Yes it may have a different plot, bur the theme is the same. Overall, I could say this ep is 7/10!

Kinda creepy at first but turns smart quick 👻 Maomao and Lishu get good focus. I like how it mixes mystery with character stuff. Jinshi being Jinshi is always a plus lol.

The way Maomao shows concern to those in need regardless of their status or faction is admirable. All she wants is to solve the case. Solving the case helped Lady Lishu be reminded of her mother and for Jinshi to witness how the ladies-in-waiting treat her.

Honnyan scrubbing that rug with so much aggression because she was worried about Maomao made me smile and her protective energy at the Jade Palace is always so relatable

I almost lost it when Jinshi put his finger on her lips to shut her up and she just looked completely unimpressed and her lack of interest in his charms is everything

Jinshi burning that letter at the end was such a dark turn and his face looked so different without that fake smile he always wears for the court ladies

Seeing that puppet dance in the moonlight was actually pretty spooky until Maomao started pulling the strings and showed how simple the trick really was with some bamboo and silk

Lihaku is such a gem for helping Maomao climb onto that roof even if she completely ignored him and his energy is the perfect contrast to all the palace drama

The backstory for Lady Fuyo and her lost guard lover actually made me tear up a bit, and Maomao choosing to keep her secret shows she has a lot of heart under that blunt personality and it was also great to see Jinshi act with actual mercy and I loved that he finally called her by her actual name instead of just apothecary

That puppet reveal was so clever and the way Lady Fuyo used regional dance to honor her lover was such a beautiful way to turn a scary story into something meaningful

The way Maomao found that tiny silk thread on the balcony was so satisfying and she really is the only one who looks for physical proof instead of just screaming about ghosts

I couldn't stop laughing when Maomao started hugging that jar of rare herbs because it is the only thing that actually makes her show any real emotion and excitement

I was genuinely surprised by how much Lady Fuyo's grief affected me, her crying for her guard felt so raw. Maomao's incredibly detached response made me wonder if she's compartmentalized her emotions this much from all her past experiences, which is a little sad when I think about it.

I was smiling seeing Lihaku help Maomao get up on that roof; he's so reliably eager to just be part of whatever she's up to, it makes me think he genuinely enjoys her eccentricities. It's sweet how he just beams, happy to be included in her investigations.

I honestly couldn't believe Jinshi would waste a favor just to get Maomao to check out a ghost, but then again, it totally tracks with how desperate he is for her attention. My girl Maomao, though, she just batted away his flirting like it was nothing, as usual.

maomao's quiet understanding of lady fuyo's grief really stood out to me, it's those moments where her compassion shines through her usual detached demeanor. of course, she was over the moon about those rare herbs, and honestly, i just love that her greatest reward is always related to her poisons! but jinshi burning that letter has me wondering what deep secret he's trying to bury, and if it's connected to all the other palace intrigue we've seen lately.

Wow, that shift in Jinshi's office at the end really hit me; seeing him burn that letter made me realize how much heavier his burdens are than I thought. It just felt so significant, like whatever was in it completely overshadowed the whole ghost mystery from earlier.

EPISODE CONTEXT

Sitting at the midpoint of Season 2's 24-episode run, episode 14 follows 'The Baths,' which dealt with Xiaolan's employment situation, and pivots back to palace intrigue with a self-contained mystery. While offering a largely standalone case, the episode maintains narrative threads with key characters like Lishu and Jinshi, setting the stage for 'Ice,' where Maomao's resourcefulness faces a fresh challenge in the episodes ahead.
