An interesting start and premise.. I did find it hard to take seriously at first because they sent cockroaches to mars but still, at least they named them something cool I guess; Feels like the cockroaches will be very menacing from the preview.

Didn't expect it to be this way actually. Started off with some kind of horror graphic, I thought we're going to talk about murder etc etc... But then the plot showed up with an intense opening scene and I was like??? WOW?? definitely hooked from the early scene, it was great

The show opens like a normal space mission for about five minutes and then suddenly drops you into nightmare territory where everything goes wrong and you realize this is going to be a very brutal ride.

UP: Bro this premiere is WILD. Dude fights a BEAR in a cage match for money to save his sick friend. The bear is EATING his guts and he still wins?? Crazy. DOWN: The pacing is lightning fast, barely time to breathe. The censorship is terrible but that's not in the tag list. 🐻

Talk about a rollercoaster of emotions, and just barely into the first episode. We are introduced to Akari who is fighting in an underground death match with your average weight lifter from America. He’s there for his childhood friend Yuriko, who is currently battling a rare disease and needs a transplant. The pacing is like trying to get you hooked as fast as possible, which to its credit doesn’t want the viewer to waste their time. Since by the end of the episode they are mission briefed and are headed straight for Mars. The world building is exceptional, and the lore is well thought out. If you stuck through this episode you know you won’t be bored.

Although there's not much in terms of character background, this episode does a great job in building a unique world setting. The animation is beautiful, the characters have personality, and there's gore foreshadowing. It reminded me of Star Troopers. I'm interested, let's see!

Man fights bugs on Mars. Fun premise, but episode one buries it under a generic backstory and brutal censorship black bars cover half the action. Tone is confused, somehow feels boring despite roach-punching. OVA prequel is supposedly better. This first impression? Rough.

EPISODE CONTEXT

As the series premiere of a 13-episode season, 'Mutation' prioritizes character establishment over the larger Mars-based conflict, grounding viewers in Akari Hizamaru's motivations and fighting spirit before the narrative escalates. This Earth-set introduction serves as essential groundwork for the broader mission against the mutated Terraformars and the Alien Engine Virus that drives the season's central storyline. Subsequent episodes will transition from personal stakes to a full-scale survival horror scenario on Mars, making this opener the calm-before-the-storm entry point.
