Slay the Gods Movie: The Dead of Cangnan
Oshimeter
Synopsis
In modern Cangnan City, ancient gods have started stirring awake, and the first one out of the gate is a Western deity's artifact called Shiva's Wrath — which is about as bad for the locals as it sounds. Lin Qiye is a young guy living in Cangnan City who ends up carrying the power of twin gods inside him, which is less of a gift and more of a complicated burden. He gets recruited into the Night Watchmen, a secretive group that handles supernatural threats so ordinary people don't have to know the world is falling apart around them. The setup here is a clash between Eastern and Western mythologies playing out on city streets, with Lin Qiye caught in the middle of what's shaping up to be a Second War of the Gods. This ONA leans hard into its psychological side — it's not just about flashy fights, though those are here too. There's real weight to the characters figuring out what these divine powers cost them. The animation blends traditional Chinese art influences with sharp modern action sequences, and the soundtrack mixes traditional instruments with contemporary scoring in a way that actually works. If you liked the mythological worldbuilding in New Gods: Yang Jian or the deity-level power struggles in The War Records of Deification, this hits similar notes. Fans of Xian Ni: Shenlin Zhi Zhan will also find familiar ground with the Eastern mythology framework. It's darker and more grounded than you might expect going in.
