Synopsis
As captain of her high school karate club, Morisaki Yui carries a strong sense of justice and zero idea that she's about to become a magical warrior. When a shadowy organization called Zaidagu starts steamrolling the city's police with superhuman fighters, Yui stumbles upon Polka, a tiny being carrying the soul of an ancient warrior. Turns out, the dark king Daagunoa is breaking free from a centuries-old seal, and Polka needs someone worthy to inherit the power of Pony Celes, a sacred armored champion. Yui fits the bill, so now she's balancing school life with fighting an entire evil army. This is an OVA from Studio Majin, adapted from a game and set to drop in 2026. The setup is classic magical girl transformation stuff: ordinary girl gains extraordinary power, but filtered through a distinctly adult lens. Think intricate character designs, detailed animation, and a protagonist who actually has some backbone rather than just being a damsel. The narrative leans into the conflict between Yui's everyday normalcy and the escalating darkness she's thrown into. If you liked the dark magical girl energy of Mahou Shoujo Ai, or the action-meets-adult-content approach of Taimanin Asagi and Bible Black, this sits comfortably in that space. It's got a genuine story thread running through it though, with Yui's transformation arc and the looming threat of Daagunoa giving it more structure than you might expect from the genre.

Watching the sky turn that deep purple when the dark knights showed up was really cool looking
The visual style during the transformation is incredible and seeing Yui use her martial arts skills while in that Pony Celes form made my day
That final fight against the shadows of Zaidagu showed how much danger Yui is in and the darker tone fits the art style perfectly
You really feel the weight of every hit Yui lands during that first fight because her karate training translates so well into her magical girl form and the action looks great
You can really tell it is going to be a rough time for Yui because that transformation sequence was intense and lingered way too long on her fear while those creatures were closing in on her and the way the music shifted from school vibes to something really heavy was great for establishing the dark mood right away
I really did not expect the transformation scene to get that graphic and Yui looks so stressed out by the monster attack
Seeing Yui struggle with the weight of her new powers while trying to act normal at school is such a bummer, but the visuals are really polished
That transition from the karate club to the dark king stuff felt a bit fast but Yui is a strong lead so far
Yui using her karate background to actually fight back even before the transformation stuff happened made such a huge impression on me because she is definitely not a typical weak magical girl protagonist
Having Yui as a karate captain was a smart move because I think it gives her some actual backbone when things get weird, unlike some other series in this genre where the girl just waits to be saved. The transformation sequence looked very expensive and it captures that adult tone perfectly while Daagunoa feels like a real threat right from the start of the show
I really wasnt expecting a magical girl show to start with a karate club captain but Yui is such a breath of fresh air, the way she met Polka felt pretty different from the usual genre tropes and I am curious to see how the Pony Celes power works because the designs for the Zaidagu monsters looked surprisingly detailed for a first episode
Her armor appearing at the very end made her look like a total warrior
Karate skills really come in handy when the shadows attack and Yui being an expert makes her much more capable than the average magical girl
It is cool seeing a magical girl show that leans into the adult angle from the start, and the way Yui just accepts her new reality to protect her school shows she has guts
seeing the dark king daagunoa show up right after her school practice was such a jarring shift but the designs for the monsters are actually pretty terrifying
The character designs are a bit retro but they work well for this kind of fantasy setting
I thought the animation quality on that first transformation was way better than expected and Yui looks great in her warrior form
The transformation scene was actually pretty intense and I like how they handled the adult themes without it feeling too forced. My favorite thing was definitely seeing Yui keep her backbone when things got crazy because she feels way more capable than most magical girl leads you usually see in these kinds of shows especially with that karate captain background of hers
I was impressed by the character designs and the animation during the battle was much smoother than I expected for a game adaptation and Yui is a great lead
It feels like a lot is being thrown at you at once with the whole Zaidagu organization and king Daagunoa lore but the animation quality from Studio Majin is keeping things interesting
