I am still thinking about that scene where she had to choose between the pendant and the map and the look on her face when the pendant shattered was devastating because it was all she had left of her father and now I am just wondering if she can even finish the journey without the magic inside of it

Why does no one talk about this show because the monster design for that giant shadow thing was actually kind of terrifying

You can tell the budget went into that mid-air battle, especially when the dragon started breathing blue fire across the screen

I really like the villain design and his voice actor sounds like he is having way too much fun with those evil lines

That cliffhanger happened out of nowhere after a pretty slow start and now the wait for next week is going to suck

The animation on her cape during that stand against the knight was so fluid and it made the whole fight look way more professional

Those magic spells have so much personality and the way the colors bleed together during the big explosion at the end was such a treat

The dynamic between Celes and the rest of the traveling party really carried the slower moments for me. Watching them bicker over the map before that ambush happened felt very human. The animation during the forest chase held up way better than expected for a random nineties OVA and the music stayed stuck in my head.

I spent the whole time rooting for Celes during that sword training because seeing her fail so many times made the eventual success feel earned

Celes looks so different with her hair down and that flashback to her childhood made the ending way sadder than it needed to be

That villain with the cape is so dramatic for no reason but the way he sent those minions after the main group was pretty tense

The way the moon looked in that final shot was gorgeous, plus the voice acting during the fight really sold how scared she was

That weird little mascot thing is actually kind of creepy and the way its eyes change color during the transformation scene makes it look untrustworthy

The background art for the castle during the sunset looked amazing and it really helped sell the whole fantasy vibe they are going for

Her armor design is way more detailed than in the first episode, especially the engravings on the chest plate that started glowing blue during the forest chase

I think that action sequence in the second half was surprisingly fluid for such an old show and Celes looked really cool during the final blast

I forgot how to breathe when the shadow creature almost caught the pony and it made me jump when the branch snapped

That sword glowed so bright when Celes grabbed it and you could hear the music go silent right before she slashed through the fog

that twist about the princess being a fake was actually a smart move and it explains why her behavior was so weird in the first half of the episode

EPISODE CONTEXT

Building directly on the protagonist's transformation established in Episode 1, this episode confronts her with the immediate and destabilizing consequences of her new role. It functions as the arc's pressure test, the idealism or shock of Episode 1 gives way to harder realities here. The conflicts introduced set up an escalating trajectory for the episodes ahead.
