Episode Context

This premiere establishes the series' signature tonal clash between eerie supernatural horror and dry, awkward character comedy. A rain-lashed, isolated forbidden mountain and its frightening serpent-shaped curse god are shot with genuine atmosphere, while the central interactions between Hinata, Kaoru, and Dara-san land as deadpan comedy. Hinata and Kaoru carry the episode with brisk, curious energy; Dara-san supplies much of the resistance to their unorthodox behavior. The episode builds the Misogiya family's connection to the mountain and the local dread surrounding its restricted ground, introduces the unsettling visual presence of Yamatagi-Madara, and keeps exposition light. Ominous warnings lead into stormy exploration, visual humor, and a surprisingly gentle first-contact story. The result is a premiere that defines the horror-and-warmth balance the series will rely on.
