A heavy, dialogue-driven episode exploring tragic past warfare. I love how the graphics shift down to a desaturated, blood-soaked crimson and ash-grey colour palette during Nanao's brief, intense memories of her home battlefield. What a masterpiece!
The dark background makes it feel like an enemy could pop out at any moment. The flashbacks added depth to the story's emotional moments, and you can really feel the strong friendship they've built together.
Decent episode. Some character interactions feel one dimensional and weak, even if they're on screen presence wasn't very long. Gimmick type characters. After Nanao's backstory was revealed, and we learned more about Andrews, we circle back to Katie. Right now, if her only role in this show is to care for animals and dangerously lead her friends into situations, then I think that's a pretty bad use of her character.
