When Liko actually forfeited the match, I was genuinely surprised because she still didn't grasp that she was hurting Wakaba and even her own Sprigatito by holding back. It makes me wonder if she'll ever fully get over her initial shyness, but I really hope she learns to push herself more.

Roy finally landing that Flamethrower had me screaming at my TV, I knew he had it in him! Kabu's tough love for Liko was exactly what she needed, and I think it'll really help her understand that sometimes you gotta be fierce, not just friendly, to grow as a trainer. Plus, it's so cool how much they're showing off Galar lately.

The Litwick training game did such a good job highlighting how Liko and Roy differ in their battle styles before they even stepped onto the field for the real match against Kabu

Liko reflecting on the deck of the airship at the end was such a quiet and powerful way to end the episode after all the intense training and the hard lessons from Kabu

The training session with the Litwick was a cool way to show the basics matter and Roy really needed that win after struggling at first

Getting a real lead on Rayquaza heading to the Galar Mine makes the next part of the trip feel much more urgent

Wow, when Fuecoco finally landed that Flamethrower, I literally cheered out loud! After all the practice and times it didn't quite work, seeing Roy's face light up with pride made me so happy for both of them.

Having Centiskorch tower over those rookies showed the gap they need to close if they want to find Rayquaza

The way Kabu explained that failure is just a path to growth really stuck with me, and he feels like the most grounded gym leader we have seen in ages.

I felt that lecture Kabu gave Liko about her forfeiting the battle because it was such a sharp lesson on respecting your rivals and the effort they put into their own training

Roy finding his rhythm with Fuecoco to learn Flamethrower was such a huge step for him after he spent the first half of the day missing every single Litwick target in the stadium

Kabu was so much better here than in Journeys and seeing him actually push the kids during that jogging scene felt right because he takes his job seriously

Liko really surprised me by just quitting that battle against Wakaba, I mean, isn't that just plain rude when someone's giving their all? Kabu absolutely nailed it calling her out, because sometimes compassion can actually be disrespectful in a challenge.

It was tough watching Wakaba look so crushed when Liko gave up and it made Kabu's lecture about giving your best to show respect for your opponent feel very necessary for both of them

My jaw totally dropped seeing Centiskorch just tank every single one of Roy's fire attacks thanks to Flash Fire – I really thought he had it in the bag! It was cool to see that moment spark something in him, making him dig deep and get creative to find a different way to fight back.

Wait, I didn't expect Kabu to be that strict with Liko but he was totally right to call her out for forfeiting that way. It was painful to see Wakaba so upset when she just wanted a real test against a strong opponent. Roy getting Flamethrower was incredible though and seeing Centiskorch look that intimidating in the stadium made the whole Galar setting feel alive

Hearing Kabu talk about how failure is actually a path to growth really changed the energy of the training session, and Roy finally hitting his targets after such a rough start was great

My heart went out to Liko when Kabu explained that her kindness was actually a form of arrogance and it really makes you think about what it means to be a true partner

Liko being forced to confront her own kindness as a potential weakness was a great follow up to her watching Roy succeed with Flamethrower and it sets up her future training in a grounded way

I loved seeing Centiskorch just tank everything Liko and Roy threw at it, especially when it used Flash Fire to turn Roy's own heat against him like a pro.

EPISODE CONTEXT

Coming off the more emotionally personal 'The Bittersweet Truth,' which centered on Murdock's backstory, episode 20 pivots back to Liko and Roy's growth as trainers during their time in the Galar region. This episode functions as a developmental checkpoint, giving both protagonists the training foundation they'll need for the challenges ahead. It's a deliberate slowdown that invests in character before the next wave of adventure escalates.
