The story about the Hare and the Turtle is a classic. An overconfident hare and slow turtle that slowly and steadily wins the race. But what kind of twist can Ookami-san bring to such a classic and straightforward story? The answer might surprise you while giving a really funny episode with a lot of unexpected twists for some characters personalities.

I’m not a fan of this episode’s theme. It leans into some misogynistic ideas, from fat-shaming a kid who doesn’t even look overweight to having only the male students decide the winner of a girls' pageant. While I can see what the episode was going for, those outdated tropes undermined its message.

Episode Context

Episode 3 shifts the spotlight away from the central duo and onto Otohime, giving the series its first real character-focused detour. The Otogi Bank crew throws their weight behind her in a school beauty pageant, and the result is an episode that runs on competitive energy and personal insecurity in equal measure. The fairy tale framework, tortoise versus hare, gives the rivalry a playful structure, but there's genuine warmth underneath the comedy as themes of self-esteem and support take center stage. J.C.Staff keeps the pacing lively, bouncing between slapstick group antics and quieter, more introspective beats without losing momentum. If you've been watching mainly for Ryōko and Ryōshi, this is where the show signals it has a broader ensemble worth investing in. Light, charming, and surprisingly earnest.
