filler flashback episode where they're debating who the next hokage should be, with a lot of early team 7 nostalgia mixed in - the kakashi nomination stuff is fine but it's mostly setup and nothing really happens, typical breather episode in the middle of a big arc

seeing sumaru get taken by the thief after all that training makes you feel for the kid and his obsession with the star

you rarely see rock lee and tenten working alone like this, so it was cool seeing them try to sneak around even if they failed and got spotted immediately

I liked seeing Rock Lee and Ten-Ten together without Neji for once. Their attempt at being sneaky was so bad but funny

The mystery with Sumaru and that thief is actually interesting for filler. The song his mom sang was pretty sad

the way the music builds when they talk about the star training makes the whole village feel eerie and dangerous for naruto

this feels like a real arc and you forget it is even filler sometimes because the writing for sumaru and the star mystery is actually good

i have been humming the natsuhiboshi song for an hour now and the melody is just so haunting when you realize what it means for sumaru

rock lee and tenten trying to be stealthy only to get caught immediately is exactly the kind of stuff you watch naruto for

hearing that lullaby and seeing the star get stolen makes you wonder what kind of dark secrets this village is hiding from naruto and the others

I teared up a bit when the natsuhiboshi song started playing, because it captures that lonely feeling so well and it makes you feel bad for sumaru and it is rare for a filler character to get me this invested and I really want to know what happened to his parents or why the star training is so dangerous for the ninjas

i am really interested in who this thief is because the mystery behind the village and the star is better than most of the main show

you can really tell they put effort into this arc because it feels like a real story and not just a weird side mission to kill time

I was not expecting a filler episode to get this deep with the family drama and Natsuhi coming back to save her son from the star thieves made me actually care about these characters

The mystery of the masked ninja finally being solved and revealing it was just a mom trying to save her kid from a death trap was such a solid twist for this arc

Naruto trying to help Sumaru find the truth about his parents was a nice change of pace and seeing them bond over their shared loneliness really worked for this specific story

The Star Guard arc is actually one of the better filler stories since it adds a lot of depth to the world and shows how smaller villages struggle for power and Natsuhi choosing to basically haunt her own home just to stop the star training was a really heavy reveal, and it makes you wonder how many other tiny villages are destroying themselves

My heart broke when Sumaru realized his mom was actually alive and had been watching over him as a ghost the whole time because that lullaby scene was just so heavy

That peacock chakra method looks pretty cool but knowing it slowly destroys your body from the inside because of the meteorite radiation makes every single fight in this arc feel way more dangerous

Hearing that lullaby play while Natsuhi protects Sumaru from the shadows is really sad, because you can tell how much she still cares about him even after all those years apart

EPISODE CONTEXT

Sitting at episode 179 of 220, this is deep in Naruto's extended filler run that follows the main story's conclusion around episode 135. It continues directly from 'Encounter! The Boy with a Star's Name,' which established the Leaf Village's mission to guard Hoshigakure's mysterious star, and it sets the stage for 'Hidden Jutsu: The Price of The Ninja Art: Kujaku,' where the fallout from the star's theft and the Star Village's buried secrets begin to surface.
