You can tell Jiraiya really cares about his students when he makes up that whole super S-rank mission just to get their spirits up after everything that happened

The introduction of the Fūma clan gives the squad a real reason to keep training and looking for leads on Orochimaru and his hideout

I thought it was sweet that Jiraiya looked out for their mental health with that fake mission and he knew exactly how to distract Naruto

Jiraiya lying about an S-rank mission to make Naruto feel better is why he is the best teacher and that retro music track halfway through was a nice touch

Having the trio back together on a mission makes the transition away from the main plot feel much smoother and the banter with Jiraiya is the best part

Sasuke leaving left such a huge hole in the team and this episode handles the emotional fallout way better than most filler arcs do

The way Sakura and Naruto are still so down about Sasuke is tough to watch but Jiraiya trying to distract them with a fake mission is great

I think this is one of the better fillers because it actually cares about the characters and their sadness over losing their teammate

It is actually rare to see Sakura get some focus alongside Naruto and Jiraiya, especially when they are all grieving the loss of their friend together

Watching the dynamic between these three on the road makes for a refreshing change of pace and the humor lands perfectly after all that heavy drama

I like that Jiraiya stepped up to help Naruto and Sakura deal with Sasuke leaving and that fake S-rank mission was actually such a nice gesture from him

I was expecting a total drop in quality after the Sasuke retrieval arc, but seeing Jiraiya take Naruto and Sakura under his wing like this was actually pretty touching. He knew they were hurting and he used that fake mission as a way to keep them moving forward and it was exactly what the team needed to stop mourning Sasuke for five minutes

My heart broke seeing the look on Naruto's face when they mentioned the Hidden Sound village because you know he is just desperate to find his friend

Pervy Sage really knows how to handle these kids and making up a fake S rank mission was a genius move to get them out of their heads

You can tell the animation quality dropped since the big fight but the character stuff with Sakura being frustrated about her own weakness keeps me interested for now

Exploring the Land of Rice Fields and seeing the leftovers of Orochimaru's experiments gives the world a much darker tone than the usual filler episodes

I honestly didn't expect much since it's filler, but the way they addressed the depression after the Sasuke retrieval arc felt very grounded. Naruto and Sakura are both such a mess right now, and seeing them try to function on this mission while Jiraiya watches over them is pretty touching even if the Fuma clan stuff feels a bit random

Naruto trying to act all tough and ready for a big mission while he is still clearly hurting over Sasuke is just sad to watch

I really felt for Sakura when she looked so miserable at the start of the episode, and Jiraiya inventing a fake mission to help them heal was a kind gesture

It is obviously filler and the pacing feels slow but seeing Sakura finally realize she needs to step up her game makes it somewhat tolerable

EPISODE CONTEXT

Episode 136 lands immediately after the emotionally charged 'The Promise That Could Not Be Kept' (Episode 135), which closed out the Sasuke Retrieval arc — one of the original series' most iconic stretches. This episode serves as a transitional filler bridging into the 'Land of Rice Fields Investigation Mission' storyline, redirecting focus toward Naruto, Sakura, and Jiraiya's next steps. With 84 episodes remaining in the original 220-episode run, the series is now deep into its extended filler-heavy back half.
