Synopsis
Asa and Kame strike up an immediate friendship when they arrive at the same time for their first day of duty at the Ooku, the splendid pleasure palace housing the harem of Lord Tenshi. The two young women are there to join the many hundreds of other maidservants—men are barred from entering, with immediate beheading the price of trespassing. It soon becomes clear that behind the luxurious lifestyle and ritualized routines of the Ooku lie sinister schemes and cynical rivalries. Meanwhile, a mysterious wandering potion-peddler known only as the Medicine Seller subtly insinuates himself into the Ooku, just as an uncanny, otherworldly menace begins to reveal itself.

I TRIED I REALLY DID BUT ITS TOO HARD TO LIKE IT
Bro this movie is straight-up sensory overload but like… INTENTIONAL. The visuals are so loud it gaslights you at first, then suddenly the narrative locks in and you’re drowning in symbolism about identity, girlhood, and losing yourself. Asa/Kame broke me lowkey.
Slow but really immersive. The story leans more on tension than scares, and the palace setting feels heavy in a good way. Animation is super unique and eye-catching. Overall, watch if you enjoy deep, artsy stories; skip if you want something fast-paced.

a visual overload in the best way. the art style is pure chaos, the story about girlhood and losing yourself hits hard, and that scene at the end will stick with you. it is fast, messy, and absolutely gorgeous. you should watch it twice.
Visually, is insane like a living ukiyo-e painting on acid. But the story loses you hard in the first half. Newcomers will be completely lost without watching the 2007 series first. Style carries it, substance struggles to keep up.
