This is the very beginning, episode one of 172, so there is nothing preceding it. Everything here is foundation: Kaede, Mirumo, and the magical mechanics that will drive the next 171 episodes are established here for the first time. Getting this episode right matters, as it sets viewer expectations for the long haul ahead.
