Meanwhile, at Restaurant 99, the heroines, Anna and Rin, are drawn into a far more mundane mystery: a child's missing toy. They reassure Reiji, the crying boy, that they will solve the case, unaware of the shadows gathering elsewhere. The mundane and the mystical sit side by side, a familiar trope.

Anna and Rin play detective, quickly narrowing suspects to a deliveryman who seems a bit too nervous. Anna uses a sharp eye, noticing a small tag on the toy in a photo. She deduces the toy's soft nature, allowing it to be hidden in the man's small pouch. Cornered by their pointed fingers and questions about his route, the deliveryman's facade crumbles. The exposed deliveryman bursts into manic laughter, shedding his human form to reveal Phantom, the theatrical villain. He mocks Anna and Rin before leaping away, daring them to follow. The girls pursue him through the city, realizing their civilian forms cannot keep pace. In a flash of pink and purple light, they transform, becoming Cure Answer and Cure Mystic, their everyday lives merging with their heroic duties.

Phantom corrupts Reiji's plushie, transforming it into the monstrous Haninda, a giant, roaring creature that shatters windows. As the Cures prepare for battle, Arcana Shadow descends, warning Phantom of their master's imminent arrival. The heroines must now contend with both the giant monster and a skilled new opponent. Usonowar formally introduces himself, his voice booming with calm authority. He opens his 'Mirage Book,' declaring Anna and Rin to be "errors" in the world's destined history. He intends to erase them to clear the path for his new world. He reveals his goal: to gather the shards of the Makoto Jewel. He states that the Precures' ancestors shattered the jewel, making this conflict centuries in the making.

With a snap of his fingers, Usonowar unleashes a wave of purple energy, throwing the Precures through a wall. Their attacks vanish before reaching him, their strength called 'feeble truth' against his 'infinite lies.' He then casually demonstrates his power on a nearby couple, replacing their love with intense hatred, causing them to fight. Anna and Rin watch in horror, their belief shaken by his casual cruelty.

Usonowar turns his attention back to the Precures, unleashing a dark miasma that targets their bond. He whispers toxic lies, claiming their friendship is a burden. Answer and Mystic launch a desperate joint attack, channeling all their magic into a single, concentrated strike. Usonowar effortlessly catches their combined punch with one hand, completely unfazed. He laughs at their 'childish hope' and prepares to crush them with a massive explosion of purple energy. The girls are sent flying, their transformations flickering as they near the limits of their endurance.

Usonowar pauses his attack, reading a passage from the Mirage Book, a prophecy from July of 1999. He recites a dark verse about a "Great King of Terror" who will cover the world in lies and shadow.
