Star Detective Precure! Episode 12: The Secret of Cure Arcana Shadow!

Mei struggles with a stubborn window, a mundane frustration. Her friend Mikuru arrives, and their conversation quickly turns to Arcana Shadow, the mysterious figure. Mei, remembering how they were saved, suggests they investigate the phantom thief themselves. This decision marks their true journey into the complexities of heroism.

Armed with Mikuru's comically bad sketch of Arcana Shadow, the girls attempt to question passersby in the shopping district. They show the drawing to couples, an elderly woman, and even a dog, but no one recognizes the figure. Their initial enthusiasm quickly dissolves into exhaustion, exposing the limits of their 'detective' methods. The search yields nothing but comedic futility.

Meanwhile, Arcana Shadow, in her civilian guise, calmly enjoys an ice cream, despite her fairy companion Mashu sensing an impending 'troublesome request.' The villain Gouemon then bursts onto the scene, distraught over a Makoto Jewel trapped in a 'misanga.' He explains his inability to steal it without destroying the feelings within. Arcana Shadow agrees to intervene, but not without demanding compensation.

Arcana Shadow assumes a new disguise, transforming into Hanamaru, a mature-looking shop clerk with glasses. She blends seamlessly into 'Bill Record,' organizing CDs with professional grace while Gouemon observes, still baffled by her plan. Here, she encounters Masami, a young girl listening to a song about unrequited love, and notices the frayed misanga on her wrist. The setup for heartbreak is complete.

Mei and Mikuru enter the record shop, still waving their sketch, and fail to recognize Hanamaru. Their attention quickly shifts to Masami's misanga, which they find charming. Masami then shares her story, revealing she made the bracelet with a wish for her unrequited love. The boy she admires soon enters, oblivious to Masami's presence, asking Hanamaru for the restroom.

Mei urges Masami to speak to her crush, but at that crucial moment, the misanga on Masami's wrist snaps in two. Everyone freezes in shock, the symbol of her wish destroyed. To make matters worse, the boy returns from the restroom, greeted warmly by another girl, and they leave together. Masami is left utterly heartbroken, her dream shattered, now convinced the misanga was a lie and wants to discard it.

Hanamaru steps in, stopping Masami from discarding the misanga. She offers surprisingly profound wisdom, telling Masami that the feelings she invested were real and valuable, not lies. Masami is moved to tears and decides to keep the broken pieces. Later, Mei and Mikuru learn from a real clerk that no 'blonde girl in a purple hoodie' works there. The realization dawns: Hanamaru was the phantom all along.

The girls confront Hanamaru in an alley, Mikuru dramatically accusing her of being Cure Arcana Shadow. Arcana Shadow laughs coolly, dropping her disguise to reveal her true form, acknowledging their improving detective skills. She then initiates a spectacular transformation, summoning a vortex of purple and gold light to become her gothic-styled battle form. Not to be outdone, Mei and Mikuru activate their own Jewel Precure Watches, transforming into Cure Answer and Cure Mystique, ready for battle.

Cure Answer launches a direct attack against Cure Arcana Shadow, but her punches and kicks are effortlessly dodged. Arcana Shadow criticizes her lack of strategy, easily parrying both Answer and Cure Mystique's blows. Tooma, watching from a distance, suddenly realizes that Arcana Shadow's purple light matches the light that saved them previously. Arcana Shadow confirms she intervened but explains her motive: she collects Makoto Jewels to return things to their 'proper place,' denying any 'kindness' and stating the Precure are naive. She is a hero with a pragmatic, almost cold, philosophy.

Their conversation is cut short as Gouemon reappears, having secured the Makoto Jewel from the broken misanga. He summons a Hanninger monster, a twisted, giant version of Masami's bracelet made of coiling threads. The monster easily traps Cure Answer and Cure Mystique, constricting them against the alley walls. Cure Answer remembers Masami's earnest feelings and shouts that they are not trash, fueling her power to break free. She urges Mystique to join her.

The two Precure combine their powers, unleashing 'Precure Flying Spectrum,' a massive, rainbow-colored cyclone of energy. The Hanninger monster is disintegrated by this force, and the dark Jewel is purified. Gouemon watches in horror as his plan fails, his monster reverting to harmless threads. Pochitan proudly catches the now-glowing Makoto Jewel, as Answer and Mystique sigh in relief, their hero forms fading, a sense of accomplishment settling over the quiet alley. Gouemon escapes with a parting insult.

Before disappearing in a flurry of purple petals, Arcana Shadow offers Mei a surprising piece of advice about the stubborn window at Pretty Holic: 'push it upward.' The next day, Masami visits Mei and Mikuru, now much brighter, determined to move on and focus on self-improvement. Mei then tries Arcana Shadow's trick, and the window opens effortlessly. This reveals Arcana Shadow knows intimate details about their lives, deepening the mystery surrounding her and fueling Mei's resolve to understand her true nature.
