Medalist Episode 1: A Genius on the Ice

A young Inori Yuitsuka sits in dim light, watching a figure skater on television. The narrator speaks of the immense sacrifices required for such beauty, framing the dream as almost unattainable. The light from the screen illuminates Inori's face, showing a deep, silent hope.

Tsukasa Akeuraji skates at a public rink, clearly skilled but out of place among the children. He checks the time, frustrated by the chaos and his own physical limits. A brief flashback shows a receptionist bluntly dismissing his dream at fourteen: "Impossible." He sighs, a man burdened by his past, adrift in a world he loves but cannot fully inhabit.

In the locker room, Tsukasa is dejected, his job interview postponed. He hears a sound, then catches Inori emerging from behind the rental counter with skates. He questions her, knowing she is trying to sneak onto the ice. Inori is caught, embarrassed and exposed.

At home, Inori tries but cannot bring herself to show the list to her preoccupied Mother (Itoka Yuitsuka), retreating in discouragement. At school, her classmates exclude her, making her feel useless.

Alone in the schoolyard, Inori watches other children, reflecting on her deep desire to skate. Despite Tsukasa's warnings, she cannot give up. She starts digging for worms again, resolving to return to the rink, tears mixing with the dirt.

Tsukasa meets his former skating partner, Hitomi Takamine, who now coaches a local club. She offers him an assistant coach position, reminding him of his past talent. Tsukasa hesitates, still feeling the sting of his own failures. The offer represents a potential future for him, even as his past holds him back.

Inori and her Mother arrive at the rink to meet Hitomi. Tsukasa is shocked to see Inori again. Itoka Yuitsuka explains her profound fear of skating, detailing her eldest daughter's failure and injury. She views the sport as a source of pain and financial burden, not a dream. Hitomi and Tsukasa listen, understanding the depth of her parental anxiety.

Tsukasa interrupts, proposing a deal: let him see Inori skate just once. He argues it is unfair to deny her without witnessing her potential. Itoka is surprised, Inori a mixture of hope and terror. Hitomi agrees to a trial lesson, noting the high costs and pressures of competitive skating.

In the locker room, Tsukasa helps Inori with her skates. He admits his own past fear of telling his parents his dreams, acknowledging her courage. He urges her to give her all, as this is her chance to sway her mother. Inori's face sets with renewed focus, ready to step onto the ice.

Inori glides onto the ice, immediately displaying unexpected speed and smoothness. Tsukasa and Hitomi are stunned by her natural flow, her movements leaving a trail of 'stardust.' Itoka watches, her eyes widening in disbelief at her daughter's transformation. Tsukasa shouts, proclaiming her a natural talent. Tsukasa nearly agrees, acknowledging the grim truth from his own experience. But then Inori breaks down, tearfully declaring her hatred for her current life, where she feels good at nothing. Skating is the only thing that makes her feel special. Deeply moved, Tsukasa makes a bold declaration: he will be her personal coach, promising to take her to Nationals. His conviction wears down Itoka's resistance, and she finally gives her permission. Inori celebrates, formally introducing herself to Tsukasa, who calls her name wonderful.
