this was such a hilarious but deeply heartwarming episode! getting so deep into matsunaga's character on his very first appearance was wonderful. the dialogue between them was just so meaningful.

dedicating an entire episode to deconstructing a veteran player on the verge of retirement is a brilliant narrative decision. it balances profound, character-driven dialogue with highly effective comedic relief.

Rei’s next opponent is the 60 year old Matsunaga, having reached over 40 years of professional play. It’s a somber moment, until the old man reveals he’s more emotional than one might imagine.

A shogi match with a lot on the line. For Kiriyama, defeat could mean getting closer to a demotion, but to his opponent, Matsunaga it could very well mean his retirement. With 40 years of experience playing shogi, what has he seen? Endure? Will Kiriyama put an end to his career?

This is by far the funniest episode! This series is finally getting interesting. I hope other people will not stop watching it at episode 3!

This episode is so cool. I love Rei's closeness with Matsunaga. I think I'm starting to get interested in shogi because the song is ringing in my head.

brings shogi back into the spotlight a little bit. There is not a lot of tension but you can tell how important the game is to him.

I’m starting to get brainrot from the shogi song, LOL! Jokes aside, Matsunaga’s enlightenment and competitive spirit really uplift the episode. This tsundere old man is also quite funny. I really enjoyed watching it. Overall, great—the animation, style, details are top-notch.
