seeing him finally crash out and let all those suppressed emotions go hit me really hard. i am just so glad he finally let it all out. you just want to give the poor kid a massive hug

the fundamental strength of this series lies in its exceptional character writing. the warmth of the found family dynamic acts as a necessary counterbalance to the heavier psychological elements, executed flawlessly by the production team.

the animation and the music combined are just too good bro... i know ive said this before but i cant help it it really is that good. letting rei fully crash out here was exactly what he needed, the kid has been holding it in for way too long... and the character insight this ep is absolutely insane

What does it mean when both the victor and the defeated gain no joy? Rei faces off against a player named Yasui, in a game that feels both hollow and full of tension. When Rei’s feelings come crashing down, it brings out the pain of what it means for the winner to take it all.

With Christmas approaching, Kiriyama has another shogi match to go through, and just like last time, his thoughts are poisoned by the words of his sister. When losing is not an option and winning means getting in the way of this opponents lives. Would everything be his fault?

I love how Rei is now expressing his emotions. It feels awful to be in his shoes too, and I hate his foster sister for torturing his mind!!

The match in this episode has a very deep meaning. The emotions that Rei felt really happened with a real life case so it made me think about it.

It feels a little more intense than the ones before it. The stress in his life becomes clearer. It is still emotional but it's a little stronger now.

What an emotional episode. The pettiness in human nature is really tough to deal with. Rei’s emotional conflict and breakdown are very understandable. Overall, an amazing episode—the story is amazing, the subtle details in emotions are expressed amazingly, and the scene is clean.

EPISODE CONTEXT

Watch this intense episode for Rei Kiriyama's raw emotional breakdown, as Scouts highlight his long-suppressed feelings finally surfacing during a pivotal shogi match.
