this kyoto arc is so well written! i love how even though rei isn't the one competing right now, we are still seeing him learn and grow by watching shimada's struggles. it is such a beautiful way to handle his development.

shifting the focal point of the kyoto arc away from the protagonist to highlight shimada's intense struggles is a brilliant structural choice. it facilitates indirect character growth, preparing the protagonist for his next developmental milestone.

shimada looks absolutely miserable right now but somehow it is making him look so hot IM SORRY. its kinda crazy that the main character isn't even the one competing but is learning so much. this arc is awesome sauce

Rei being the only person left who believes in Shimada's potential to win and also, being the person who knows how to counterattack Souya even when people thought it was already a lost case is a good sign!

The match continues but it looks like Shimada’ chances are slim according to the gossip going around. Meanwhile, Kiriyama is put in a unexpected and situation. Being the only person still fully believing in Shimada, Kiriyama pays close attention as the match comes to a close.

Amidst these falling snowdrops, Shimada plays once more to prevent four consecutive losses. Rei is made an observer of this match in short notice and bears witness to this match’s cold intensity which is expertly conveyed through the art and soundtrack.

This episode is truly very meaningful. I felt the tension in the match and was also swept away by Shimada's condition.

Very heavy and It is hard to watch because the feelings look real. It doesn't try to be dramatic which makes it hit harder.

What a sad outcome. Although Rei found a way out, Shimada unfortunately didn’t. The pressure really got into him. That said, Rei’s growth after seeing Shimada’s exhausted state is the highlight of this episode. Overall, great—stylish direction, emotionally stirring, and intense.
