focusing on shimada's story this time was beautiful. the wording and monologues are so poetic, i can only imagine how gorgeous the original japanese dialogue must be. the storytelling is pure gold.

dedicating narrative space to shimada's backstory demonstrates exquisite storytelling. furthermore, utilizing the chairman for necessary comedic relief effectively breaks the tension, preventing the episode from becoming overly suffocating.

the storytelling is just absolutely top tier. i wish i understood japanese the way these translation has been nothing but beautiful i wonder if the real dialogue could touch me in levels i cant even imagine. and i really love the chairman, adding that comedic relief is exactly what we needed to break the heavy tension

I feel sad for Shimada's past. I mean, he did everything to follow his love for Shogi at a very young age. And in this episode, we've been seeing a lot of character development of Rei, too. He's now allowing people to be part of his life and even allowing them to rely on him.

With the fourth and decisive title match of the Shishi-ou Tournament coming up, Kiriyama helps a struggling Shimada to prepare for his decisive battle all while we learn a bit more about Shimada’s past, his introduction to shogi and the story behind his infamous stomach pains.

The fourth match of the tournament is readily approaching. We see a bit of backstory for Shimada making you feel for him while currently Rei lends a hand to Shimada as the two of them head to Kyoto.

the scene becomes more emotional. The situation is clearer now and it does not appear fair and slow pace makes the feeling stronger.

Shimada’s backstory is really interesting. How he climbed to his current level through sheer effort is very admirable. Overall, fine—the pacing is really slow, but the writing is amazing. The animation is great and the scenes are funny and enjoyable.
