The world building is fantastic, imagining the war in a fantasy style is engaging with novelty. We see some character growth in Alec, the music scene in sync with his training is well put together. Chaos is unfolding. Interesting to see how Deryn & Alek's paths will meet.

I love to see what kind of worlds people can create with fantasy, I'm extremely interested in history and have been learning a lot about the Yugoslavian countries, ww1, WW2, the USSR and politics in general fascinate me endlessly, this show is such a perfect one, i love it.

The piano sequence with Alek’s mom was such a gut punch, especially seeing how he uses that rhythm to pilot the walker now. It makes the clunky metal feel so much more personal. Deryn meeting Dr. Barlow and those glowing eggs was a total highlight.

Episode Context

A slow-burn worldbuilding episode that splits its focus between two protagonists navigating vastly different circumstances. Alek contends with the weight of his fugitive reality, while Deryn Sharp, disguised as 'Dylan', finds her footing aboard the living airship HMS Leviathan, meeting its crew and absorbing the strangeness of bioengineered flight. The tone is tense but exploratory, prioritizing atmosphere and identity over action. Expect deliberate pacing as the series invests in establishing the rules of its alternate-history world and the internal conflicts driving both leads. Themes of adaptation, disguise, and survival under pressure run through every scene. This is the kind of episode that rewards patience, character groundwork is being laid here that the rest of the season will build on. Come for the steampunk-meets-biopunk aesthetics; stay for the dual coming-of-age tension.
