Coming directly after Episode 63's emotionally devastating fallout, where Hikaru confronts Sai's absence and questions whether he can continue playing Go, this standalone flashback operates as a deliberate pause before the narrative shifts gears. While it doesn't advance the main plot, its placement feels pointed, reminding viewers of the bond between Hikaru and Sai at a moment when that loss is most raw. Episode 65 pivots to Isumi's journey in China, resuming the series' forward momentum toward its final stretch.
